Of course, not all contractors and builders are like the ones who seem to find their way to Laura?s doorstep. Even so, a survey by the Fannie Mae Foundation, which was designed to determine whether women are more financially independent today than they were 25 years ago, found that supermarkets, medical providers, banks, colleges, and online services scored high for gender equality, but the mortgage industry and home repair and construction services failed the test.
?
The worst scores went to remodeling contractors and residential builders. Of those women surveyed, 57 percent failed them on fairness, and only 9 percent gave them an A.
?
Laura is not one to suffer fools gladly, and if you are a woman?whether married, single, or otherwise?you should not, either. The influence of women on the home improvement market is only bound to increase.
?
By 2010, women-headed households are projected to increase to 31 million, or close to 28 percent of U.S. households, a study suggests. Furthermore, the number of single women homebuyers has doubled in the last 15 years, according to National Association of Realtors.
?
In 2003, the last year for which data are available, 21 percent of home purchases were made by single women, up from 18 percent in 1997. Single women also accounted for 13 percent of all vacation/second-home buyers in 2003. One in five single women bought homes. The ratio for men was one in ten, the association reported.
