Huawei continues to demonstrate rail communication innovation at ...
Following recent ground-breaking rail projects that Huawei was awarded worldwide, Huawei will continue to address the need to place passengers at the heart of the railway, addressing safety and reliability as critical components. Along with carriage comfort, journey updates and free on-board entertainment, Huawei will join rail experts in supporting Middle East railway operators to encourage more public transport commuters.
The Middle East and especially the GCC is seeing increased investment in rail technology. Currently rail projects worth over $100bn are being developed in the GCC. The most ambitious project is the GCC Rail Network, which will span all six GCC nations linking each of the member states in a regional railway network. When completed in 2017, the network is likely to change the face of transport and logistics in the region. It will offer enormous efficiencies in transportation, as well as furthering the vision of a closely-integrated regional community.
Rabii Ouadi, Head of Business Development, Transportation Solutions at Huawei Enterprise, Middle East and North Africa, commented ahead of the event, "Within the next 10 years the transportation infrastructure in the Middle East will dramatically change, with countries around the region becoming interlinked and and becoming a more tight knit community. This year, Huawei will focus on its solutions in the 4G technology that is set to dramatically enhance passenger experience onboard the train. Another focus will be Huawei's GSM-R, a reliable and secure communication system developed especially for railways to enable seamless contact between train drivers and control dispatchers on station platforms. Datacom, Transmission Networks; ICT solutions for metro and urban rail, and Intelligent Video Surveillance solutions that are critical to the construction and operation of modern railway infrastructure will also be addressed during the event.
Mr. Ouadi added, "Looking towards the future of railway networks, communication providers believe that networks will ultimately use 4G LTE technology for all railway communication systems. Huawei is diligently researching and developing more railway features based on LTE, with the vision of ultimately merging and having only one single communication system infrastructure."
As a key participant and speaker at the event, Huawei has rail experts who will present its portfolio of railway ICT solutions, designed to address specific challenges related to GCC railway projects for both the train and metro. Highlights of how we are moving to the Digital train age will be discussed, along with another presentation entitled: "Smooth evolution built-in: how High Speed Railway Communications paves the way for train-ground broadband communication." A panel discussion will also be held on the first day, inviting industry international rail consultants, including Huawei, to provide their insights for ways that Middle East rail operators can increase their passenger numbers.
Huawei already has regional experience in providing mobile transmissions network for the Dubai Metro Green Line and is currently working on the Etihad Rail project providing the core network infrastructure with GSM-R, MSN (Multi-Service Networks) and a Masterclock.

Train-ground wireless network, based on 4G technology, enhances the passenger's experience on board a high speed train by allowing for onboard broadband internet and mobile coverage. Enabling passengers to video-call home and connect to the office over wifi or cellular networks, passengers can also keep track of their travel itinerary through integrated scheduling and ticketing systems: all accessible by downloading an application on their smart phones. Railway operators will also have the ability to share information on journey updates, passenger and train status as well as being able to keep a close eye on physical security issues by using the latest CCTV monitoring equipment.

Preserve CIA prisons as evidence, lawyers for 9/11 suspects ask
GUANTANAMO BAY U.S. NAVAL BASE, Cuba (Reuters) - Lawyers for five alleged 9/11 conspirators who claim they were tortured in secret CIA prisons have asked a U.S. military judge to order that the prisons be preserved as evidence.
The issue is one of more than two dozen on the docket for a week of pretrial hearings set to begin on Monday in the war crimes tribunal at the Guantanamo Bay U.S. Naval Base in Cuba.
The defendants include Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the accused mastermind of the hijacked plane attacks that killed 2,976 people on September 11, 2001, and four other prisoners accused of training and aiding the hijackers.
Defense lawyers also asked the judge to order the U.S. government to turn over all White House or Justice Department documents authorizing the CIA to move suspected al Qaeda captives across borders without judicial review and to hold and interrogate them in secret prisons after the September 11 attacks.
President George W. Bush announced in 2006 that the 9/11 defendants were among a group of "high-value" captives sent to Guantanamo from the secret prisons.
The CIA has acknowledged that Mohammed was subjected to the simulated drowning technique known as waterboarding, and the defendants said they were also subjected to sleep deprivation, threats, and being chained in painful positions.
The defense lawyers will argue that their clients' treatment was illegal pretrial punishment and constituted "outrageous government misconduct" that could justify dismissal of the charges, or at least spare the defendants from execution if convicted.
"By its nature, torture affects the admissibility of evidence, the credibility of witnesses the appropriateness of punishment and the legitimacy of the prosecution itself," the defense lawyers wrote in court documents.
At least one potential witness was also held in the CIA prisons and his treatment could raise questions about the admissibility of his testimony, said James Connell, defense attorney for Mohammed's nephew, defendant Ali Abdul-Aziz Ali.
The chief prosecutor, Brigadier General Mark Martins, said the prosecution does not plan to introduce any evidence obtained from the defendants or anyone else via torture, cruelty or inhuman treatment - which is prohibited by U.S. law and international treaty.
ABU GHRAIB PRISON
The judge presiding over the 9/11 trial, Army Colonel James Pohl, ordered in 2004 that the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq be preserved as a "crime scene." He was at the time presiding over the trial of U.S. military police officers accused of torturing and photographing prisoners at Abu Ghraib.
Iraq was then under U.S. occupation. It was unclear whether Pohl had authority to order the preservation of the CIA prisons, whose location the government has kept secret, arguing that disclosure could threaten U.S. national security and put allies at risk.
Polish prosecutors are investigating allegations that one of the sites was in Poland, and there is evidence the CIA set up others in Romania, Lithuania and Thailand, according to reports by the Council of Europe and the United Nations.
But before the court considers the CIA prisons, it will hear issues such as whether attorney-client communications are being improperly monitored and censored at Guantanamo and how to handle sensitive but non-classified data such as medical records.
Mohammed and his nephew are Pakistani citizens. The other defendants are Yemenis Walid bin Attash and Ramzi Binalshibh and Saudi Mustafa al Hawsawi.
They have been in U.S. custody for a decade but there are still numerous legal and evidentiary issues that must be resolved before their trial begins on charges that include murder, hijacking, terrorism and attacking civilians.
"We are inching methodically toward judgment day," Martins said.

CSN: 49ers plan to stay low-key in New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS -- There is no French Quarter in Youngstown, Ohio.
And there certainly are no places in Youngstown to get an adult beverage or hot beignets at 3 a.m.
But the 49ers' week-long stay at the site of Super Bowl XLVII is bringing back memories of the road trips the club has taken the past two years during the regular season.
Yes, there will be a lot more media and hype surrounding the 49ers' game Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens, but it is also a time for the team to focus on football -- just as they've done in Youngstown on week-long trips.
"It's a good thing," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. "We've done this really the last two years, stayed in a hotel, had our meetings in a hotel and go to a facility and practice and get ready for a game.

"But it's the same approach as always, really. Enjoy the moment, enjoy preparations. I think that's what our team enjoys the most is the practice, meetings and, especially, the competition."
In 2011, the 49ers played at Cincinnati and had a game the following week in Philadelphia. Harbaugh decided to keep the team in the Youngstown area to avoid back-to-back flights to the east.
On the back end of that trip, the 49ers rallied from a 20-point third-quarter deficit to pull off a 24-23 victory over the Eagles to springboard the 49ers to a 13-3 regular-season record.
The 49ers had similar success this season, as they followed up a loss at Minnesota with a week in Youngstown to prepare to face the New York Jets. The 49ers installed a game plan in which Colin Kaepernick saw his first action at quarterback, and the 49ers rolled to a 34-0 victory over the Jets.
"We'll be out here for a week, so we have to approach it that way," safety Dashon Goldson said. "We'll get accustomed to a new enviroment and practice in a different facility. We'll have to adapt to it. We've been in that situation before."
The 49ers will begin practice later this week at the practice facility of the New Orleans Saints in Metairie, La.

Defensive tackle Justin Smith said he does not mind the time away, as the focus is typically on nothing but football.
"Once you get done with today tomorrow, the media day stuff, I think it'll be a regular work week," Smith said. "It's what we'd do normally on the road. We've already done it once with Youngstown. I don't think it'll be that much difference."
The 49ers, who arrived at their team hotel on Sunday evening, have film rooms set up at their hotel. Players can get to the film room early in the morning or late at night without any kind of commute involved.
The goal for Harbaugh and the 49ers is to keep the week as normal as possible. And that's why the experience of Youngstown can be beneficial.
"We'll still have the same body of work that we'd have if we were back home, the same kind of work we had in Youngstown," linebacker Patrick Willis said. "The only difference got to do a whole lot of media.
"And this is not Youngstown."

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Background checks for firearms purchases spiked after the December 14 mass shooting at a school in Newtown, Connecticut, new data from the FBI showed on Monday.
According to data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), nine of the top 10 days for firearms checks from November 30, 1998, to January 27, 2013, including December 14, 2012, occurred since Adam Lanza killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School and then shot and killed himself.
Lanza also killed his mother before the school massacre. His use of an AR 15 assault-type rifle and high-capacity ammunition magazines have been at the heart of the contentious debate over gun control.
The NICS is a nationwide system for checking criminal records, developed by the FBI with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and local and state law enforcement agencies. The system is run by the FBI.
According to the FBI data, the leading six days for background checks before the sale of firearms occurred after December 14, 2012. The top five weeks for background checks were the week of the massacre and afterward.
Since November 30, 1998, the top day for background checks before gun sales was December 21, 2012, a week after the massacre. Checks that day numbered 177,170.
The top week since November 30, 1998, was December 17 to December 23, 2012, when 953,613 background checks were requested.
Gun control advocates argue that civilians do not need to own assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. Gun rights supporters argue that efforts to ban assault weapons are an attack on the second amendment right of the U.S. constitution, which addresses the right to bear arms.

Arrests made in Brazil fire as funerals begin
SANTA MARIA, Brazil (AP) ? Brazilian police say they've made three arrests and are seeking a fourth person in connection with a nightclub fire that killed more than 230 people.
Inspector Ranolfo Vieira Junior said at a Monday press conference that the arrests are for investigative purposes. He says the detentions have five-day limits.
He declined to identify those arrested or the fourth person sought.
More than 230 people died early Sunday during the fire at a university party in southern Brazil. Police have said they think a band's pyrotechnics show ignited sound insulation on the ceiling, causing the blaze.
The Zero Hora newspaper quotes lawyer Jader Marques as saying his client Elissandro Spohr, a co-owner of the club, was arrested. The paper also says two band members were arrested.
Funerals began Monday in the city of Santa Maria, Brazil, where the blaze took place.

S&P 500 vaults 1,500 as earnings cheer Wall Street
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The S&P 500 index on Friday closed above 1,500 for the first time in more than five years as strong earnings reports, including Procter & Gamble's, helped the benchmark extend its rally to eight days.
The winning streak is the longest in eight years and left the S&P 500 about 4.1 percent away from its all-time closing high of 1,565.15 on October 9, 2007.
The equity market's strong start this year has been attributed to solid corporate results, an agreement in Washington to extend the government's borrowing power, encouraging signs from the global economy and seasonal inflows into stocks.

Sales of new U.S. single-family homes fell in December but rose in 2012 to the highest level since 2009, a sign the U.S. housing market turned a corner last year.
"Economic data in the U.S. has been trending higher, albeit modestly. Things are incrementally better," said Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial in Newark, New Jersey.
"The market was able to move forward despite deterioration in Apple and that's also a positive."
The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> rose 70.65 points or 0.51 percent, to 13,895.98, the S&P 500 <.spx> gained 8.14 points or 0.54 percent, to 1,502.96 and the Nasdaq Composite <.ixic> added 19.33 points or 0.62 percent, to 3,149.71.
The S&P 500 closed at its highest since December 10, 2007 and the Dow ended at its highest since October 31, 2007.

Adding to the bullish tone, German business morale improved for a third consecutive month in January to its highest in more than six months. In addition, European banks said they will repay the European Central Bank much more than expected of the loans the bank gave them during the crisis.
"Good news in credit markets helps set the stage for (more investment in) riskier assets," Krosby said.
For the week, the Dow rose 1.8 percent, the S&P climbed 1.1 percent and the Nasdaq rose 0.5 percent. It was the fourth straight week of gains for all three indexes.

Thomson Reuters data through Friday showed that of the 147 S&P 500 companies that have reported earnings, 68 percent exceeded expectations. Since 1994, 62 percent of companies have topped expectations, while the average over the past four quarters stands at 65 percent.

About 6.2 billion shares changed hands on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and NYSE MKT, below the daily average during January 2012 of about 6.93 billion shares.

Spanish daily halts edition with fake Chavez photo
MADRID (AP) ? The leading Spanish newspaper El Pais withdrew and reprinted its Thursday edition after discovering that its front-page exclusive photograph supposedly showing ailing Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez being treated in Cuba was a fake.
The paper apologized to its readers for the mistake.
The poor-quality image showed the head of a man apparently on a hospital bed with tubes in his mouth.
El Pais had received the picture from an agency, Gtres Online, which declined to comment on the situation. The agency handles mainly entertainment and celebrity photos. The agency also offered the photo to The Associated Press and another Spanish newspaper, which both turned it down.
El Pais said it withdrew its Thursday edition and changed its website after it discovered the photograph was not of Chavez. It did not explain how it realized the picture was a fake but said it could not independently confirm how, when or where the photograph had been taken.
Chavez has not been seen in public since undergoing cancer surgery on Dec. 11 in Cuba.
El Pais prints some 340,000 copies daily. Many copies had already been distributed before the decision to reprint but the newspaper declined to say how many with the fake photograph had reached the streets.
El Pais said the photograph was on its online edition for 30 minutes before the error was discovered and the site changed.
Venezuelan Information Minister Ernesto Villegas denounced the photograph as a fake in a series of Twitter messages. He said the picture came from a video of another man and he circulated a link.
That video, uploaded to YouTube in 2008, clearly shows another patient lying on a treatment table as doctors and nurses insert a tube into his throat.
"Would El Pais publish a similar photo of some European leader? Of its director? Yellow journalism valid if the victim is a South American revolutionary," Villegas said in one tweet. He accused El Pais of systematically violating the policies of its own style manual "to attack Venezuela."
Speaking at a news conference later on Thursday, Villegas appeared on television and read a communique strongly condemning the Spanish newspaper for publishing the image, saying the daily "violated journalistic ethics" and "created an international scandal."
Villegas said Venezuela would take legal action against the newspaper, though he did not provide details.
Pedro J. Ramirez, editor of the Spanish paper El Mundo, said in tweets on Thursday that his paper was also offered the photo. However, he and other editors expressed reservations over whether it was genuine before announcing a unanimous decision to refuse it.
Santiago Lyon, AP vice president and director of photography, said the AP turned down the agency's offer of exclusive rights to distribute the photo "because of serious concerns over medical privacy issues as well as the authenticity and provenance of the image."
