(AP) ? Whether it turns out to be a tearful farewell or simply another fun-filled evening of tennis, Friday night figures to be electric in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Pretty much like any night Andy Roddick is playing at the U.S. Open.

The man who has defined American tennis, for better and worse, over the last decade or so, announced on Thursday, his 30th birthday, that this year's U.S. Open will be his last tournament.

He's calling it quits at the scene of his biggest triumph, the 2003 U.S. Open, and at the place where his name was virtually always on the marquee, even as his days as the world's top-ranked player faded further into the rearview mirror.

Wearing a black T-shirt with a black cap pulled low over his eyes, Roddick came into his hastily called news conference, held shortly before a night session that featured No. 1 Roger Federer's straight-set victory and Venus Williams' three-set loss to No. 6 Angelique Kerber.

"I'll make this short and sweet," Roddick said. "I've decided that this is going to be my last tournament."

But there will be some time to linger, to reflect on a career that produced only the one major title but always kept people filing through the turnstiles at Flushing Meadows. They came because they knew they'd get their money's worth from a gritty, no-nonsense guy who helped the U.S. to the 2007 Davis Cup title and remains the last American man to hoist a trophy at a Grand Slam.

"Do we love to have a guy like that out there? Sure," said Gordon Smith, the CEO of the U.S. Tennis Association. "Was it great that he's an American? Sure. But the greatest part was that he battled. He was a warrior. And he loved to play for his country. We could use another dozen Andy Roddicks."

Certainly, Smith isn't the only one who feels that way, and Roddick said he was announcing his retirement a little early because he wanted a proper chance to say goodbye ? not only to the hundreds of players he battled but the dozens he mentored, as well.

"He's been my biggest role model the last 10 years playing tennis, watching tennis," said American Sam Querrey, one of the many young players who has spent years trying to replace Roddick at the top of the country's tennis ladder.

"It doesn't get to be 'Besides Andy Roddick, who is there?'" said 20-year-old Ryan Harrison, who sometimes trains with Roddick near their home in Austin, Texas. "It's now, like, 'What's coming?' and I'm ready."

But before that, Roddick's second-round opponent will be 19-year-old Bernard Tomic and, yes, there's at least a decent chance the 43rd-ranked Australian could beat him.

The prospect of Roddick falling so early in the fortnight in front of the home fans used to be unthinkable. Not the case anymore ? he's lost in the second round in 2010 and the third in 2009 ? and as the summer of 2012 wore on, he could see the future, not as a top-20 player anymore but as someone struggling to make it into the second week of events like this one.

No way to play, in Roddick's estimation.

"Probably the first time in my career that I can sit here and say I'm not sure that I can put everything into it physically and emotionally," he said. "I don't know that I want to disrespect the game by coasting home. I had plans to play a smaller schedule next year. But the more I thought about it, I think you've either got to be all in or not."

And while his fans and critics may have questioned his tactics and some of his brutish antics over his colorful career, nobody ever doubted that Roddick was always in it, 100 percent.

He had one of the biggest serves on tour and was still clocking in as high as 141 mph in a first-round win over 21-year-old American Rhyne Williams earlier this week. And he could be stubborn, willing to stay out there for hours and pound away from the baseline, even as the players got stronger, faster, more consistent and the results started going against him.

Some say his only real mistake was coming along at the wrong time, sandwiched in between the last golden era of American tennis ? Agassi and Pete Sampras ? and the current golden era of worldwide tennis, featuring Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

After his 2003 win at Flushing, Roddick ran into Federer the final four times he made a Grand Slam final and lost all four. The most memorable of the meetings was the 16-14 fifth set at Wimbledon in 2009 ? the last time Roddick played for a major title.

"But let's forget about that," Federer said of the loss. "He was in those Wimbledon finals. He could have gotten that title. That's what I said when I beat him in '09. He deserves this title, as well. In my mind, he is a Wimbledon champion as well, a wonderful ambassador for the game."

Besides settling down with his supermodel wife, Brooklyn Decker, Roddick says he wants to get more involved in a youth tennis center he's started in Austin, Texas. He's got other projects, too, "that excite me a lot right now."

For now, he lives in the present, knowing every match this week (and next?) could be his last at a tennis park that has long felt like his second home.

Back in 1991, Roddick was at Flushing Meadows ? a 9-year-old kid who only had a grounds pass, but somehow made it into the stadium whenever Jimmy Connors was playing, pumping up the volume during a memorable run to the semifinals at age 39.

Is Roddick ready to let it all hang out one last time and create some magic of his own?

"We'll see," he said. "I wish it was a choice."

The Best Ways To Find A Dentist Seattle | ArticlePDQ.com

If you notice small white spots on your teeth, you?re in the very early stage of tooth decay, and it is best to visit a dentist Seattle. This could be reversed by brushing two times a day using a fluoride toothpaste and chewing sugar free chewing gum to increase saliva flow to remineralize tooth enamel. But, without these preventive measures, frequent drinking and eating places teeth at an increased risk. After many acid attacks, a cavity could soon build up from the enamel ? once the enamel has been breached, the tooth decay is irreversible.

Damage of the teeth by tooth decay can lead to problems like tooth infection, pain, difficulty in chewing, tooth removal or root canal, less pleasing appearance, speech impairment because of tooth loss, as well as terrible mouth smell.

A root canal is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or becomes infected. In a root canal procedure, the pulp and nerve are extracted and the interior of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. Without treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected and abscesses could form. The pulp or pulp chamber is the very soft area inside the root canal. The nerve of the tooth lies in the root canal. A tooth?s nerve isn?t extremely important to a tooth?s health and function after the tooth has appeared through the gums. Its only function is sensory ? to provide the impression of hot or cold. The presence or absence of a nerve is not going to affect the daily functioning of the tooth.

When you have a cavity in one or even more teeth, in there accumulates food particles that goes bad from the bacterial fermentation and brings about halitosis. You can brush your teeth, floss or utilize mouth wash, but you can?t clean in deep cavities. The only treatment for halitosis caused by decay cavities is getting all those cavities treated by your dentist. At times, because a tooth doesn?t receive root canal treatment whenever it should, its pulp gets to be necrotic or gangrenous causing terrible breath. The only remedy for these kinds of conditions is root canal treatment, removing the bacteria from the root canal and also filling it.

Finding a dentist Seattle might seem difficult, but the benefit is that you might be able to depend on great service for a long time after finishing a thorough initial check-up. Ask around. Close relatives, neighbors, buddies, and co-workers may be excellent sources of information regarding quality and inept dental care. If you like someone?s teeth, inquire about the dentist?s name. Conversely, if someone gripes about dental treatment, know who provided it and stay away from that office. As you drive through town, look around for signs posted that advertise a dentist. Notice whether the parking area is packed or empty and if the building looks well taken care of or abandoned. These are not fool-proof signs, but can provide preliminary impression of the practice. Get the telephone number and call the clinic for more information. If it seems to be a professional dental practice, schedule a session for the 1st visit. If that goes well, continue to return for examinations. However, if you don?t feel you are receiving good care, look around for another dentist to try next.

Hurricane Isaac storm surge tops levee in Plaquemines Parish

A storm surge pounds the seawall along Lake Pontchartrain as Isaac makes landfall. (AP)

A storm surge from Hurricane Isaac topped a levee in Plaquemines Parish south of New Orleans early Wednesday, officials said, trapping those who chose not to evacuate.

Plaquemines Parish president Billy Nungesser said the 18-mile, 8-foot-high levee--which is not part of the near $15 billion federal levee system constructed after Hurricane Katrina--was in the process of being raised.

"We knew we had a potential storm surge of nine to 12 feet--we had an eight foot levee," Nungresser said on CNN. "We're trying to get the few people who have stayed out. We've got a serious situation over there."

[Live-blog: Hurricane Isaac batters New Orleans, Gulf Coast]

Isaac made landfall at 6:45 p.m. CDT Tuesday in Plaquemines Parish, and the slow-moving Category 1 hurricane--now centered about 50 miles southwest of New Orleans with maximum sustained winds topping 80 mph--is expected to dump as much as 20 inches of rain in several parts of Louisiana.

"Not only did we see the worst case scenario, it got worse than that by this storm just stalling," Nungresser said. "So the levees can only take so much."

Nungresser said there were reports of up to 12 feet of water in some homes. "This is something I've never seen before," Nungresser said. "And I rode out Katrina."

[Slideshow: Hurricane Isaac pounds Gulf Coast]

He said three parish residents, including a woman on a roof, were saved by a private boat. Rescue workers were waiting for conditions to improve--and skies to lighten--before attempting other rescues.

"We're working with U.S. Coast Guard to rescue people stranded on top of levee," Nungresser said at a press conference.

The southern end of the parish was under a mandatory evacuation order, though it's not clear how many residents followed it.

"There are homes inundated and some folks trapped by water in those homes," Guy Laigast, director of homeland security for Plaquemines Parish, told the Weather Channel.

According to News Orleans' Times-Picayune, Jesse Schaffer and his son have been rescuing stranded residents with their boat.

"We've rescued at least 23 people including children," Jesse Shaffer Jr. said.

Meanwhile, more than 500,000 customers were left without power in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi, utility companies said. According to the Associated Press, most of the outages are in areas around New Orleans.

A tornado warning has also been issued in southern Mississippi.

Business Travel Comment: BLOG COMMENT - Government Buying

I wonder why it is that Governments buy so very badly?

Is it that they want to be so straightforward and politically correct?

Or is it that they know no other way to buy?

I played a major part in winning an enormous UK government contract and I still persuade myself that I do not want the answer. I am as near as you can get into being in denial as you can without being blatant about it and it makes me feel bad.

The process is difficult. In fact, when you get the invitation, the first thing you feel urged to do is throw it in the bin. Why? Because it is so frighteningly 'open' that it discourages one from bidding in case you expose all your benefits to competitor scrutiny. So bad that you fear that following such a track will lead to ultimate demise!

You see you have to bite the bullet and bid. Yes, they have processes and yes, they do have disclosure laws but YES, there are ways around this.

Governments are complex and very political. they need to be seen to be following processes despite their fear of ridicule, which is why you need to feed them what they need rather than what they want.

So bid with impunity. Just provide with integrity. Then you will be OK.

Take it Slow if You Want Your Relationship to Last | Psychology Today

Falling head over heels in love means, to many couples, having sex as soon as possible. The rush of infatuation leads people to take the next steps in their relationship without looking objectively at the odds of the relationship succeeding. Before they know it, they?re making plans to move in together. Unfortunately, many of these hurried unions lead to disappointment as the relationships falls apart before it?s even had time to take shape. The breakup takes its emotional, if not financial, toll on both partners. Ever hopeful that the next time will be better, however, many people find themselves almost instantly in a new and similarly passionate relationship. Chaotic and impulsive these series of entries and exits into relationships, called ?churning,? take their toll. Relationships that form under these circumstances, should they lead to marriage, are more likely to suffer in terms of quality.?

Close relationship researchers have known for years that couples who cohabitate before marriage (and are not engaged) are more likely to divorce or, if they remain together, experience poor marital quality. The ?cohabitation effect,? as it?s called, occurs because many people who live together before getting engaged slide into marriage through a process of inertia. Rather than going through the process of critically evaluating whether the relationship is right for them, they make the decision to marry out of factors such as convenience, economics, or?the sex.

Cornell University policy researcher Sharon Sassler and her research team recently decided to study relationship ?tempo.? Based on the hypothesis that churning leads people to enter less than satisfactory relationships, they investigated the connection between the timing of when couples first had sex to their later perceptions of relationship quality. In an online study of nearly 600 married and cohabitating couples in which the female partner was less than 45 years old, Sassler and colleagues examined measures of relationship quality, sexual satisfaction, communication, and conflict. Respondents indicated relationship tempo by saying how long the couple waited, after they started dating, to have sex. Controlling for a number of important other variables (age, number of prior marriages, children, education, income, and financial strain), the researchers then compared the relationship quality of couples who waited less than a month, 1-6 months, and 6 months or more.

Because the study was a cross-sectional one, meaning that people were not followed over time, this meant that it was impossible to determine whether people destined to have worse relationships jumped into sex sooner than those who would go on to be satisfied with their partners. I?ll skip over the gory details of the extensive analyses and controls that the researchers imposed, but rest assured that they did everything they could to tease apart their findings.

In general, the findings supported the hypothesis that having sex early (defined here as within a month of dating) was related to poorer relationship outcomes for men and women. These four additional findings flesh out that overall conclusion and point to some sex differences as well:

1.?Couples tend to move quickly into sexual relationships.

Over one-third reported having sex within one month after they started dating. This percentage was slightly higher than that observed in previous studies. The researchers weren?t sure if this finding reflected something unusual about the sample or that people just aren?t very good at estimating how long it takes for relationship to progress to sexual intimacy.

2. The slower the sex, the better the relationship.

For women, but not men, the longer the delay between dating and sex, the better the perception of the current relationship quality. Slowing things down for women, but not men, meant paying attention to other factors that would ultimately improve the relationship such as commitment and emotional intimacy.

3.??Early sexual activity symbolized relationship commitment.

Again for women, but not men, having sex early in the scheme of things signified to them that their partner was committed to the relationship. For men, having sex early in the dating period didn?t actually have that same meaning.

4. ?Entry into cohabitation accounted for the negative effect of relationship tempo on quality.

Couples who had sex early in the game were more likely to decide to live together and, in turn, had less satisfying relationships. For women, but not men, the factor most related to early sexual involvement was later sexual satisfaction. Having sex early in a relationship, followed by cohabitation, sets the stage for women to be less satisfied with the sex they?re having now.

These findings suggest that premarital sex, especially early in the dating relationship, has different impact on the later satisfaction of women than men. Men and women don?t seem to differ in what they want out of a sexual relationship, at least according to other research. However, they do seem to attach different meanings to sex as an indicator of commitment.

Without moralizing on whether premarital sex is bad or good for a relationship, the authors point out that practically speaking, premarital sex actually is bad for a relationship. It?s not so much the sex, however, but the cohabitation itself that it leads to which then leads the couple to slide, unthinkingly, into wedlock (or continued cohabitation). When couples are led by sexual desire, financial need, or an unexpected pregnancy to get married, they are less likely to stop and examine whether they share similar life values, goals, compatibility, and emotional intimacy. It?s that process of assessing whether they?ll make it for the long haul that ultimately will impact their relationship quality, especially for the women. Since women are generally the ones to initiate divorce proceedings, it means that their satisfaction in the relationship is especially crucial to its long-term viability.

If you?re in a long-term relationship now, you may wonder whether these findings are coming too late to help you. However, there are valuable lessons for you. If your relationship got off to a quick start, this doesn?t mean that you?re fated to be unhappy later down the road though you might be at higher risk than you might otherwise be. Being able to spot the signs of relationship difficulty could help you stop problems before they become unmanageable. You can take advantage of active listening to improve the way you communicate, which is one of the primary ways to build emotional bonds.

What about if you?re a ?churner,? and not yet in a long-term committed relationship? The upshot is clear: Take your time, examine your motivations for intimacy, and figure out whether you and your partner share a similar vision for your life and your relationship. If you and your partner take this brief intimacy quiz, you can also get an idea of whether this is going to be a good match.

Perhaps the main take-home message of the Sassler et al study is that it?s not the time that?s the factor, but what happens in the time, between dating and sexual intimacy. When the flames of passion die down, it?s the emotional quality of the relationship that will keep it going for the long haul.? Establishing the emotional bonds between you and your partner will be the key for relationship?s ability to endure over time.

First Person: Experts Demand Budget, Spending Cuts

Yahoo! News asked voters to pinpoint one single issue they'd like to see addressed at the Republican National Convention. Here are one voter's thoughts.

While meeting with Lean Six Sigma experts in banking, IT, supply chain, management, military, manufacturing, and health care I asked: "If you could speak at the GOP convention, and tell Republicans one thing, what would you say?"

The resounding response was, "Cut the budgets through government reorganization and downsizing." OK, I said, now trim that down. "Cut budgets" they all said in one voice.

But they were not satisfied. As experts who have reduced expenses in these fields this year collectively improving companies and reducing budgets by more than $20 million, they said, "We could do the same thing in government if we only had a chance." In talking to dozens of business owners, large and small, each one voiced the same opinion. Government is too large, spends too much money and is too inefficient.

The bottom line: "Cut the budget."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. home prices rose in June from the same month last year, the first year-over-year increase since the summer of 2010. The increase is the latest evidence of a nascent recovery in the housing market.

The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller home price index released Tuesday showed a gain of 0.5 percent from June 2011.

The last time the year-over-year index increased was in September 2010. For much of that 12-month period, the government was offering a home-buying tax credit.

The report also showed that all 20 cities tracked by the index rose in June from May, the second consecutive time in which every city posted month-over-month gains. And all but two cities posted stronger gains in June than May.

Detroit, Minneapolis, Chicago and Atlanta recorded the biggest one-month gains.

"The combined positive news coming from both monthly and annual rates of change in home prices bode well for the housing market," said David Blitzer, chairman of the S&P's index committee.

Jonathan Basile, an economist with Credit Suisse, said improving home prices should boost home sales further in the coming months.

"Persistent news of rising house prices should start convincing prospective home sellers that it's not just a buyers' market," Basile said. "And when Americans become more comfortable with selling their home, they also become more comfortable with buying another one."

The S&P/Case-Shiller monthly index covers roughly half of U.S. homes. It measures prices compared with those in January 2000 and creates a three-month moving average. The June figures are the latest available.

The increases partly reflect the impact of seasonal buying. The month-to-month prices aren't adjusted for seasonal factors.

Still, a measure of national prices rose for the third straight month. Home prices jumped nearly 7 percent in the April-June quarter compared to the previous quarter.

The housing market is making a modest but steady recovery in part because homes are more affordable: Mortgage rates have fallen to near-record lows. Housing prices are about one-third lower than at the peak of the housing bubble in 2006. Those trends have helped lift sales of both new and previously occupied homes.

Sales of previously occupied homes increased in July from June, the National Association of Realtors said last week. Sales have jumped 10 percent in the past year.

Builders are growing more confident after seeing more traffic from potential buyers. Last month they applied for the largest number of building permits in nearly four years last month.

The housing market has a long way to go to reach a full recovery. Some economists forecast that sales of previously occupied homes will rise 8 percent this year to about 4.6 million. That's still well below the 5.5 million annual sales pace that is considered healthy.

Sales have been held back by a low supply of homes on the market and tight credit standards, economists said. Many would-be buyers are having trouble qualifying for loans or can't afford larger down payments being required by banks. A Federal Reserve report last month showed that many banks tightened their mortgage credit standards this summer.

Still, the housing market is steadily improving and is poised to contribute to economic growth this year. Modest economic growth and job gains are encouraging more Americans to buy homes.

Syria sectarian divide turns to fear and flight

BEIRUT (AP) ? Abu Qais, a Sunni Muslim in Syria's capital Damascus, says six members of his extended family have been killed by gunmen who belong to the minority Alawite sect of President Bashar Assad.

The gunmen who grabbed one of his distant cousins called up his family while they were torturing him "so they could hear his screams," said Abu Qais, an anti-Assad activist who spoke on condition his full name not be used for fear of reprisals.

Sectarian slayings between Syria's Sunni majority and the Alawite minority have been a brutal reality of Syria's 17-month-old conflict, and they have only accelerated as the country falls into outright civil war. Sunnis have largely backed the uprising against Assad's rule, while the Alawites ? members of an offshoot of Shiism ? have firmly stood behind the regime, where they fill the leadership ranks.

And as tit-for-tat killings have swelled, so has the segregation of the two communities as they flee each other. In Damascus and other cities, Sunnis and Alawites avoid venturing into each other's neighborhoods for fear of being snatched. Some Alawite districts in the capital are now ringed with checkpoints manned not only by security forces but also residents who have taken up arms to protect their homes.

Those in mixed neighborhoods flee their homes to move into safer enclaves dominated by their community ? whether in the same city or in another part of the country.

"Mutual threats in Damascus have succeeded in triggering migration," said Fateh Jamous, an Alawite activist from Latakia, the Mediterranean coastal city where many Alawites have fled. Latakia itself has so far represented a sort of tense neutral ground ? its population is about half Sunni, half Alawite. "That created a sort of balance of terror. So far, it has been generally peaceful," he said by telephone from Latakia.

The flight raises the grim possibility that Syria could go down the path of neighboring Iraq. There, violence in 2006 and 2007 effectively turned into a sort of sectarian cleansing, as Shiite and Sunni militias and insurgents targeted members of the rival community, killing thousands and sending hundreds of thousands fleeing their homes. To this day, Baghdad remains largely divided between wholly Shiite and wholly Sunni districts with few mixed areas remaining.

Syria has not yet reached that scale. But the prospect of it breaking up along religious or ethnic lines is no longer a remote possibility in a conflict that activists estimate has killed 20,000 people as Assad's regime tries to crush rebels determined to topple him. Kurds in the northeast have begun rumbling with talk of self-rule. Alawites have been pulling back into their ancestral heartland, along the Mediterranean coast and in the nearby mountains.

Some anti-regime activists believe that two reported massacres of Sunnis earlier this year, in the towns of Houla in May and Qubeir in June, aimed to drive Sunnis out of areas near main routes to the coast to ensure control of the Alawite enclave.

But the tearing apart of the two communities has been taking place on a smaller but increasing scale, neighborhood by neighborhood and city by city.

Their coexistence has always been uneasy. Sunnis make up the vast majority of Syria's 23 million people, and Alawites about 15 percent of the population. For the past 40 years, the Assad family's regime has enforced a secular ideology that zealously marketed the notion of equality among the nation's many religious and ethnic groups.

But at the same time, it was promoting the Alawite community to which the Assad family belongs.

Alawites, who had traditionally been among the poorest in Syria, were brought in by the Assads to fill the regime's leadership, elevating them into an elite class that had historically been Sunni. Top positions in the army, police and security agencies were given to Alawite men, while their women typically worked in the government. Significantly, inter-marriages between Sunnis and Alawites have been rare, though Assad himself is married to a British-raised Sunni who hails from the central city of Homs.

In Damascus' mostly Sunni neighborhood of Mazzeh, a resident named Moaz nostalgically remembers the woods that once stood on a hill close to his home. Then, years ago, the trees were cut down, and apartment blocs went up to house Alawites taking positions in the military and government. Their area, built within the Mazzeh area to promote an image of integration, became known as Mazzeh-86.

"Our relation with them was like a cold peace, 'We mind our own business and you mind yours'," recalled Moaz, a 28-year-old anti-Assad activist. He spoke on condition his full name not be used to protect himself and his family from reprisals.

Now the two areas are virtually at war. Alawites from Mazzeh-86 frequently help put down protests by Sunnis in the larger district, beating up protesters outside mosques alongside security forces. Checkpoints divide the two areas. In Sunni Mazzeh, there have been numerous slayings of those believed to be informers for the government, both Alawites and Sunnis, said Moaz.

"People with coastal accents (Alawites) are instantly recognized. They are arrogant and sure of themselves," he said.

Damascus had been largely unaffected by the fighting raging elsewhere in the country, until last month when rebels staged a major offensive in the city of 1.7 million people, sparking a heavy regime counter-attack. As the fighting raged, sectarian violence increased. So far, it has been concentrated in poor or lower middle-class neighborhoods of the capital, while most upscale districts remain peaceful, residents and activists say.

Alawites, who by some estimates make up 30 percent of Damascus' residents, have fled neighborhoods where they make up a small minority, finding relative security elsewhere where Alawite numbers are higher, residents and activists say. Many Alawite men send their families to their home villages near the coast.

"Most Alawites are in this with the view that it is a life or death war for them," said another Damascus resident by Skype. Identifying himself only as a "native Syrian" ? refusing to give his sectarian allegiance ? he said checkpoints outside Alawite neighborhoods have been beefed up in recent weeks, with up to 15 or 20 heavily armed security men and residents staffing them.

"The Alawites think that they would be subjected to genocide if Assad goes," he said.

Sectarian violence has been rampant in Homs, a major center of the revolt that was subjected to a devastating government siege earlier this year. Residents and activists say its population has been effectively divided into two sections, with Sunnis in one side and Alawites and Christians in the other.

Mohammed Saleh, a Homs resident and a rare Alawite who actively works with the opposition, says several months ago two Sunni men showed up at his apartment and ordered him to pack up and leave in 10 days.

"I made calls. I spoke to many of my friends and contacts in Homs and elsewhere. I was able to stay," Saleh, reached by telephone in Homs, said. But Saleh's son, who had been living with him, left with his wife and kids to an Alawite part of the city.

"I am never leaving," said Saleh, a trained chemist now making a living selling solar energy systems for household use, in huge demand because of lengthy power cuts. His work takes him across the entire city, but he never travels alone. "I make a point of taking with me someone from the neighborhood I am going to. Even if it is an Alawite district, I still go with a resident from there."

Some of Saleh's closest friends and neighbors have not been so lucky.

"In December and January alone, I lost a friend who was a Sunni doctor, another who was a Shiite engineer and a third one who was an Alawite army officer," said Saleh.

Team building | So say your business is partner you go nuts with a ...

This opportunity comes the challenge of choosing the right people to work with. People can search where you build trusting relationships is important. Often, a good Alliance can later turn into a large partnership for a different project or business.

As one of the greatest things about in the business itself the flexibility is enables it, alliances, and work with other companies to offer a full range of services to our customers. Actually this can greatly increase our visibility and new customers, we can never have found that if we constantly moved our own small circles imagine.

So say your business is you partner drive you nuts

Starting a business with a partner is like any other relationship? with a twist. It can be quite expensive both financially and emotionally to walk away from the partnership. In addition the increased workload and possible loss of funding can cause stress, which which to deal with the energy no one has.

As in all relationships requires the ability, the balance of trade fair and just business practices maintain effort on both sides. Without balance, that relationship and your business could be in danger.

Manages the question then remains, how some people in partnerships and others struggle?

1. Establish clear limits: decide, who is doing what, when, where and how, and then you adhere to those limits. This can often be difficult, especially if the partner a family member or a friend. Some customers had clearly set great success in the construction of contracts, the boundaries. Keep not only the load in the balance, but also your feelings.

2. Clarify vs. confrontation: most of us avoid confrontation, but spend enough time with clarification. We might think that clarification is a need or requirement may be confrontation. A simple statement to clarify and to eliminate future misunderstandings. Clarification achieved two purposes. This eliminates the danger of mind reading, which leads to misunderstandings. Secondly, it keeps open the way of communication and honestly that is an integral part of a healthy partnership.

3. Effective communication: people feel respected, if they feel that they will be heard. Listening without interrupting, is a principle of active listening. Whether we choose as partners in a business or personal relationship, there are basic elements that must be present. Your partner should share similar, if not the same values on financial matters, work ethic, family responsibilities and objectives. Try to create a balance between knowledge and personality, in the selection of business partners. If an individual has the ability and willingness to learn, the training in the complexity of your company is a realistic expectation. On the contrary, if the individual who may be well educated, has a personality not in accordance with, the relationship to the failure is doomed. The essence of a personality cannot be changed despite some opinions. Although you can have chosen with care as a partner, unforeseen circumstances eventually can change your relationship. You cut your ties amicably as possible and continue with what you know on the best structure of your company. Remember to take into account borders, clarification and communication. Choose a person such as mind and personality, your strengths compliments. Willing to invest, to train the time if the personality is a match.

Total Vibration ? Blog Archive ? How To Have A Successful ...

No matter what, you have to manage money in your life. It is necessary for you to understand how to use it correctly. Learn as much as you can about financial independence. As you read on, you?ll learn how you can achieve this.

The best budgets take into account all of your earnings and expenditures. List all of your income, no matter what the source is. That said, you should only be including the money you have access to, and not taxes or other premiums that are withdrawn from your check. These amounts will give you the numbers you need to figure your budget. No budget can succeed if you are spending more than you are earning.

The next thing you should do is calculate how much you spend on things. Create a list of all your household expenses, as well as your personal spending. Be sure to include additional expenses, such as annual insurance premiums, in your calculations. All car-related expenses, including maintenance, gas and tune-ups, should also be included. When you are calculating food expenses, account for groceries as well as what you spend eating out. Your list should be very detailed.

Create a budget once you have your finances written down on paper. Remove unnecessary expenditures from your budget. You will find more leeway in your budget if you stop buying expensive coffee drinks from Starbucks or eating fast food.

If you notice your utility bills are high, consider upgrading your appliances or making home improvements. There are some things that cause bills to skyrocket. Try to avoid washing your dishes if you do not have a full load of dishes. The same is true for washing clothes; only do so when you have a full load.

Try to change out your appliances to more energy efficient ones. Because you will save money on your utility bills when you operate appliances that require less energy, you save cash over the long term. Unplug appliances that will not be used frequently, especially if they have lights that are always on. These indicators suck up a surprising amount of electricity.

There are many home improvement projects that end up saving you money by reducing expenses elsewhere. A good example would be a roofing project where you install insulation to keep more heat in the house. This project can lower the amount you spend on utilities.

Try using some of the following ideas to lower your costs, and get your personal finances in order. You will have lower electric and gas bills if you replace your appliances with high-efficiency models. It may cost more upfront, but it will pay for itself in the long run. You can use these monthly savings to pay your other bills, open a savings account or make other purchases.

Hey Amazon Employees, Stop Talking To Us

Screen Shot 2012-08-24 at 10.44.53 AMSomebody at Amazon in Seattle just texted us a pic of this weird propaganda poster, posted in an elevator at Headquarters: A SECURE AMAZON BEGINS WITH YOU. Basically, the message here is "Don't talk to (or in front of) tech bloggers." I'm assuming those two little Amazon employee locks (?) are discussing Amazon's top secret Time Machine plans. And that Hamburgler guy looking all shady up there in the left corner is a tech reporter, who is trying to get the AMZN Time Machine scoop for his blog, "Tech Headlines."

The squid and the iPod nano

A picture from the video showing how the colors of the Longfin Inshore squid's skin changes to music.

Squid: not just delicious, but also musical. Scientists at the Woods Hole, Mass., Marine Biological Laboratory made a trippy video, surfaced on CNET, which came about from wanting to explore how the colors of the Longfin Inshore squid's skin changes.

According to the Backyard Brains website, the Longfin Inshore has "three different chromatophore colors: brown, red, and yellow. Each chromatophore has tiny muscles along the circumference of the cell that can contract to reveal the pigment underneath."

And the best way to demonstrate the changing colors: hip-hop. The researchers attached the cephalopod to an electrode hooked up to an iPod nano, and let rip the Cypress Hill tune "Insane in the Brain."

The must-see video is seen through a microscope magnified eight times and zoomed in on the dorsal side of the fin. It was made with the help of Paloma T. Gonzalez-Bellido of Roger Hanlon's Lab in the Marine Resource Center of the Marine Biological Labs.

Viewers have grooved to the squid show more than 50,000 times. Commenters on YouTube like Captain6strings?wrote, "Great. Even invertebrates have a better sense of rhythm than me." Hamneggwich added, "They appear to prefer bass."

The squishy sea creature has also captured the imagination of robotic scientists, who have devised a rubbery robot they've dubbed a squid-bot, which you can see here, inspired by the squid and octopus, that can "crawl, camouflage itself, and hide from infrared cameras."

Consultant Offers GOP Convention Alternative

Joe Raedle/Getty Images

J.J. Dutton from Smith Fence Co. works on putting up a security fence around the Tampa Bay Times Forum on Thursday in Tampa, Fla. The city waits for Hurricane Isaac as it also prepares for the Republican National Convention, which will run Aug. 27 to 30.

Add Category 1 hurricane to the list of about 50,000 guests scheduled to attend the Republican National Convention next week in Tampa, Fla., and there could be more than just a natural disaster on the GOP's hands.

As the media and political sphere gather for a collective freak-out about being stranded in muggy Florida, a crisis communications expert said there's a way for the Grand Old Party to turn the situation into a positive for its presidential candidate.

Rich Masters, a partner at Qorvis Communications, which specializes in crisis communication, said that if presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney gets news that Hurricane Isaac will slam Tampa and makes the call to cancel the convention and hold an innovative alternative, he can show the American people just how presidential he can be.

"Everyone wants to run from crisis," Masters said. "But it's better to wrap yourself around it and figure out how to derive your message through crisis."

Masters' idea?

Gather the party's delegates in their respective states to cast their nomination ballots, and have Romney, vice presidential candidate Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan and other big-name speakers deliver their remarks at large venues in swing states such as Ohio or Colorado.

This, Masters said, prevents the possibility that the emergency personnel needed to respond to the hurricane are depleted in favor of protecting the high-profile convention attendees, inevitably causing bad feelings from Florida residents and subsequent bad press for the party.

"If you do it this way, you get goodwill and everyone in America is going to applaud [Romney] for not going to Tampa and taxing resources," Masters said.

"It won't replace a convention, but in some ways it could be even cooler," Masters added.

Canada waives Cote d?Ivoire?s $130-million debt

Canada is cancelling $130-million in debt owed by the Cote d?Ivoire, erasing an old tab to help the African country dig itself out from a pile of debt.

The Canadian action is part of a international effort to forgive billions in Ivorian debt as international players judge that President Alassane Ouattara is making headway in turning the country?s finances and governance around.

More Related to this Story

In June, the World Bank and the International Monetary fund judged that Cote d?Ivoire had met it economic criteria for debt relief, which could erase $7-billion of the African nation?s $13-billion debt. Canada, a supporter of G8-led debt relief initiatives since the 1990s, is now adding its part by cancelling $130-million in debt owed to Ottawa.

?Today?s announcement will allow C?te d?Ivoire to commit more resources to such needs as the health and education of its citizens,? Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said in a statement. ?I would also like to reiterate our support to the Ivorian Government?s continued efforts to restore peace and stability in the country.?

The Cote d?Ivoire?s debt problems date back decades, but worsened when the country stopped making interest payments during a civil war that raged between 2004 and 2007.

Mr. Ouatarra, a former IMF economist, made debt relief a priority when took office last year after a power struggle with former president Laurent Gbagbo, who refused to recognize Mr. Ouatarra?s victory in the 2010 presidential elections.

Mars Surface Data: ChemCam laser first analyses yield beautiful results

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? Members of the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover ChemCam team, including Los Alamos National Laboratory scientists, squeezed in a little extra target practice after zapping the first fist-sized rock that was placed in the laser's crosshairs last weekend.

Much to the delight of the scientific team, the laser instrument has fired nearly 500 shots so far that have produced strong, clear data about the composition of the Martian surface.

"The spectrum we have received back from Curiosity is as good as anything we looked at on Earth," said Los Alamos National Laboratory planetary scientist Roger Wiens, Principal Investigator of the ChemCam Team. "The entire MSL team was very excited about this and we popped a little champagne."

When ChemCam fires its extremely powerful laser pulse, it briefly focuses the energy of a million light bulbs onto an area the size of a pinhead. The laser blast vaporizes a small amount of its target up to seven meters (23 feet) away. The resultant flash of glowing plasma is viewed by the system's 4.3-inch aperture telescope, which sends the light down an optical fiber to a spectrometer located in the body of the rover. There, the colors of light from the flash are recorded and then sent to Earth, enabling scientists to determine the elemental composition of the vaporized material.

Scientists tested the system on Earth in a chamber that simulated the Martian atmosphere. Some of the initial spectral data from Mars look similar to some of the terrestrial standards at first glance. In the coming weeks, ChemCam researchers will pore over the data to look for tiny variations among the peaks and valleys within spectral data captured on Earth and on Mars. These comparisons will allow the team to fine tune and calibrate the instrument, ensuring that every spectral signature gathered by the rover is accurate.

Each element on the Periodic Table has a unique spectral signature. ChemCam scientists will be able to use these spectral fingerprints to decipher the composition of Martian geology, including information about whether Mars rocks ever existed in a watery environment or underwent changes due to interactions with biological organisms.

With regard to Coronation rock (the rock formerly known as N-165), ChemCam's inaugural target, "at first glance it appears consistent with a basaltic composition," Wiens said.

"What's more interesting, however, is whether the rock had dust on it or some other kind of surface coating," he said. "ChemCam saw peaks of hydrogen and magnesium during the first shots that we didn't see in subsequent firings. This could mean the rock surface was coated with dust or some other material."

With Coronation's analyses complete, the science team had a chance to pick new targets. "After Coronation, we got to shoot at a group of ugly-looking rocks in the area named 'Goulburn,'" Wiens said. "That is one of the areas near the rover that was blasted by the thrusters of the landing vehicle, but these rocks were much farther away from the rover than Coronation, providing a bit more of a test for the ChemCam's laser."

The ChemCam system is one of 10 instruments mounted on the MSL mission's Curiosity rover -- a six-wheeled mobile laboratory that will roam more than 12 miles of the planet's surface during the course of one Martian year (98 Earth weeks). The system is designed to capture as many as 14,000 observations throughout the mission.

"We are just jubilant," Wiens said. "This mission is absolutely amazing. Everything is working so well. The same applies to our instrument."

ChemCam's laser, telescope, and camera were provided by the French space agency, CNES, while the spectrometers, electronics, and software were built at Los Alamos National Laboratory, which leads the investigation. The spectrometers were developed with the aid of Ocean Optics, Incorporated, and Jet Propulsion Laboratory assisted with various aspects of development.

The Curiosity science team plans next to take the rover out for a short spin to test out other systems. As the mission progresses, researchers will study the Martian environment in the vicinity of Mount Sharp, a towering peak with a summit nearly three miles above the rover. Mount Sharp appears to contain layers of sedimentary history dating back several billion years. These layers are like pages of a book that could teach researchers much about the geological history of the planet, including whether the Martian environment ever was, or ever may be, suitable for life as we know it.
