Woz: Windows Phone is 'beautiful,' Android no 'contest,' still loves iPhone, ask again tomorrow

When Steve Wozniak talks mobile, people love to listen. Last time we checked in, he was lauding some of Android's finer points, and now he's raining praise on Windows Phone. In an interview with A New Domain, the Apple co-founder was all too happy to share his recent positive experiences with the Espoo / Redmond collaboration. In particular, Woz waxes about how intuitive the interface is, and how naturally apps lead you around. He goes on to say how there's nothing he's seen that isn't more beautiful (than iOS and Android) on the Windows system, before claiming Android is "no contest" when it comes to the interface. It's not all lemonade and roses, however, as he then admits he's no fan of the voice control functionality compared to the other two platforms. When pushed to admit what he uses as default, it's still the iPhone -- two of them in fact -- but Woz's ability to see the best in all mobile operating systems will be sure to further confirm his status as one of tech's most liked. Head down to the source to hear for yourself.

Robots fighting wars could be blamed for mistakes on the battlefield

ScienceDaily (Apr. 23, 2012) ? As militaries develop autonomous robotic warriors to replace humans on the battlefield, new ethical questions emerge. If a robot in combat has a hardware malfunction or programming glitch that causes it to kill civilians, do we blame the robot, or the humans who created and deployed it?

Some argue that robots do not have free will and therefore cannot be held morally accountable for their actions. But UW psychologists are finding that people don't have such a clear-cut view of humanoid robots.

The researchers' latest results show that humans apply a moderate amount of morality and other human characteristics to robots that are equipped with social capabilities and are capable of harming humans. In this case, the harm was financial, not life-threatening. But it still demonstrated how humans react to robot errors.

The findings imply that as robots become more sophisticated and humanlike, the public may hold them morally accountable for causing harm.

"We're moving toward a world where robots will be capable of harming humans," said lead author Peter Kahn, a UW associate professor of psychology. "With this study we're asking whether a robotic entity is conceptualized as just a tool, or as some form of a technological being that can be held responsible for its actions."

The paper was recently published in the proceedings of the International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction.

In the study, Kahn and his research team had 40 undergraduate students play a scavenger hunt with a humanlike robot, Robovie. The robot appeared autonomous, but it was remotely controlled by a researcher concealed in another room.

After a bit of small talk with the robot, each participant had two minutes to locate objects from a list of items in the room. They all found the minimum, seven, to claim the $20 prize. But when their time was up, Robovie claimed they had found only five objects.

Then came the crux of the experiment: participants' reactions to the robot's miscount.

"Most argued with Robovie," said co-author Heather Gary, a UW doctoral student in developmental psychology. "Some accused Robovie of lying or cheating."

When interviewed, 65 percent of participants said Robovie was to blame -- at least to a certain degree -- for wrongly scoring the scavenger hunt and unfairly denying the participants the $20 prize.

This suggests that as robots gain capabilities in language and social interactions, "it is likely that many people will hold a humanoid robot as partially accountable for a harm that it causes," the researchers wrote.

They argue that as militaries transform from human to robotic warfare, the chain of command that controls robots and the moral accountability of robotic warriors should be factored into jurisprudence and the Laws of Armed Conflict for cases when the robots hurt humans.

Kahn is also concerned about the morality of robotic warfare, period. "Using robotic warfare, such as drones, distances us from war, can numb us to human suffering, and make warfare more likely," he said.

The National Science Foundation funded the study. Co-authors at UW are Nathan Freier, Jolina Ruckert, Solace Shen, Heather Gary and Aimee Reichert. Other co-authors are Rachel Severson, Western Washington University; Brian Gill, Seattle Pacific University; and Takayuki Kanda and Hiroshi Ishiguro, both of Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute in Japan, which created Robovie.

Samsung countdown teases next Galaxy phone with anagram

Samsung Galaxy countdown teases you with anagrams

Sammy's latest marketing ploy kicked off with a string of nonsense that could just as easily have come from the Sunday morning jumble: "Destination: tgeltaayehxnx," declared the Samsung Mobile Twitter account. Anagram wizards will read that as, "the next Galaxy," and wouldn't you know it, it's also the URL for an auspicious countdown clock. Sammy promises to let visitors take "the next step" in about 17 hours and counting. Bonafide internet sleuths can find an extra carrot strung up in the site's source, reading, "discover how Samsung is about to challenge the way you view the Galaxy once more." Is Samsung about to break its own May 3rd unveiling? We'll let you know in 16 hours and change.

Update: It seems like that ticker just might be counting down to some sort of anagram guessing game, according to an Engadget tipster who partook in some directory diving. Among a series of assets of different colored lettered tiles he found images with instructions warnings, reading "Click on the letters in the correct order to reveal your real destination," and "Following technology blindly often gets you nowhere." Ominous.

Update 2: And there it is. Samsung's revealed two (well, one and a half) teaser videos -- but they don't reveal much.

[Thanks, Naor]

Facial Skin Cancer Types and Ways to Reduce Your Risks | Online ...

?

Skin cancer is among the most common types of cancer around. In fact, about half the people with light or fair skin that live over the age of 65 will likely develop some form of skin cancer during their lifetimes. What?s worse, many skin cancers can begin on the face due to sun exposure, use of cosmetics and several other risk factors. To increase your odds of finding facial skin cancer early and treating it successfully, it?s important to know the types, symptoms and ways to protect yourself against contributing risks.

Solar Keratosis is one type of common facial skin cancer, and it is characterized by patches of scaly skin often accompanied by redness. Typically caused by sun exposure and frequently found on the head and face, these abnormalities do not necessarily indicate cancer; however, most doctors would agree that early, preventative treatments are a good idea.

Another type of facial skin cancer is Basal Cell Carcinoma. It spreads slowly and is among the easiest to treat. It?s often found on the ears, neck, nose and face. Tumors can take on several appearances from waxy, raised bumps to brown, scaly patches. It?s also more common in adults.

Freckles and moles on the face are common, and most of the time, they are typical and benign. Things to look for in moles that could possibly lead to cancer include: asymmetry; borders (if they become irregular, blurry, etc.); coloration (most moles should have a consistent color); size (beyond a diameter of approximately six millimeters); and evolution (if it?s changing noticeably in any of the above, as well as elevation). Watch moles carefully and if you notice any of these things, have yourself checked out by your doctor.

Treatment options for facial skin cancer will depend on what type of cancer you have, as well as how progressed the disease is. You can expect a biopsy first to determine whether or not the skin abnormality is cancerous. Secondly, if the tests return positive, a process to remove the cancerous cells with as little tissue disruption as possible will take place. Third, if the cancer has spread or was extensive enough that major surgery was required, follow up chemotherapy, radiation therapy and corrective cosmetic operations may be needed.

Some people are more prone to get cancer, and if you fall into that category, you should take extra precautions against it.

People with fair skin, light hair, and light eyes are more likely to get cancer. People who expose themselves to sun and harmful UV rays are, as well. Also, if you?ve received radiation treatment in the past or have a family history of cancer, you are more likely to get it.

What can people to do to protect their faces and other parts of the body from the risks of cancer? The main thing is to shield yourself from the sun and other known cancer-causing agents. Limit exposure during the hottest parts of the day, and always use sunscreen and protective apparel. If you have an abundance of moles or a family history of cancer, be sure you are thoroughly screened at least once a year by your physician.

There are also several links between diet and cancer. Load up on garlic, fresh vegetables and fruits, nuts and whole grains?stay hydrated, too.

While protecting yourself as much as possible is paramount, detecting cancer early gives you the best chances of eliminating it.

If you want to learn more about facial skin cancer or are looking for a doctor who is an expert at treating it, contact Dr. Hunt at Riverside Oral & Facial Surgery.
