The biggest lottery prize in history is up for grabs today, and the excitement is growing out of control. The pot has swelled to an astonishing $640 million, up $100 million from Tuesday when the drawing failed - again - to produce a winner. Americans are lining up everywhere for a chance to buy tickets, their dreams of financial abundance lighting up their faces. I came across just such a line when stopping at the supermarket this afternoon. There was a line of customers waiting to purchase lottery tickets, and everybody was going after the Mega Millions even though they?d be far more likely to be struck by lighting than to win the massive prize. Just for fun, I asked the folks waiting in line what they?d do if they won the money. Everyone I talked to said, ?quit my job.?

While my question was hardly a scientific survey, their collective response really impressed me. It would be naive to expect every job to be intellectually stimulating, personally meaningful and stunningly lucrative. There?s a reason, after all, why jobs are called ?work.? Still, when asked why they?d quit their jobs if they won the lottery, the folks in line all had similar reasons. Their hours were grueling, the pay was less than they thought it should be, they didn?t feel as if they were making a positive difference and, most important, their immediate supervisors didn?t value their efforts. They were making a living, but their jobs didn?t help them make a life.

So, here are my questions. There?s a boatload of information out there about how to be a good supervisor, so why are so many bosses so bad at it? And why don?t employers seem to care much whether their employees are happy, when study after study suggests that happy, engaged employees produce more and better work? The politicians are forever promising to create jobs; why don?t they focus on creating good jobs? Especially since the 2008 meltdown, it seems to me that we hear a lot more about revving up the economy and rewarding investors than we do about the quality of life for workers on the job. But is it really ethical to ask people to trade away years of their lives for work that doesn?t necessarily support them financially or personally? After all, money is replaceable, but no one can buy a longer life.

Once again, it seems to me that we have a choice. We can continue to focus on profits at all costs, or we can redefine business success to include a more equitable distribution of assets and a better quality of life for workers. We can have both - we just have to choose to do so.

Judge: US House candidate can say he was astronaut

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? A congressional candidate in California's Central Valley can note on ballots that he used to be an astronaut.

A Sacramento County judge ruled Thursday that Democrat Jose Hernandez can use the ballot designation "astronaut." Hernandez is challenging freshman Rep. Jeff Denham, a Republican from Turlock, for California's 10th District seat.

A Sacramento law firm had argued in a lawsuit that Hernandez's use of the moniker would violate state elections law because Hernandez has left NASA. Hernandez had flown aboard the shuttle Discovery in 2009.

The Sacramento Bee reports (http://bit.ly/H3yHKG ) that Superior Court Judge Lloyd Connelly ruled that ballot designations apparently can reflect a profession or vocation held during the previous calendar year. Hernandez spent two weeks at NASA in 2011 before leaving the agency.

Humanities symposium planned to expand curriculum | Campus Times

A one million dollar endowment has been given to the College of Arts, Sciences and Engineering by UR Alumnus and Trustee Bernard T. Ferrari and his wife Linda Gaddis Ferrari for a yearly humanities symposium and related curricula.

?The symposia allows us to expand on the research and teaching that UR faculty do, enabling us to bring to campus experts in fields of interest to the broader community,? Dean for Humanities and Interdisciplinary Studies Thomas Dipiero said.

Set to feature public talks from visiting scholars with a focus on the 14th to 17th century humanistic thought, the symposium hopes to bring a greater appreciation to the beauty of art, literature and history. The symposia will take place annually and will consist of several events, with the next one set to take place in the spring semester of 2013. Talks of having them span throughout a semester and possibly the entire academic year are also on the table.

The symposium will also offer half- or full-semester long courses designed to bring a ?wide variety of humanistic inquiry to a broad cross-section of the undergraduate population? Dean Dipiero said.

This semester, nine faculty members are participating in ?The Art and Science of Time,? a series of classes in conjunction with the inaugural visit of Anthony Grafton, the Henry Putnam Professor of History at Princeton University, who gave the keynote lecture entitled ?Maps of Time: Science, Scholarship, and History in Early Modern Europe? in the Carlson-Hawkins Room in Rush Rhees Library on March 21.

?He lent us his experience as the past president of the American Historical Association, and he shared his thoughts on the future of graduate education in the humanities,? Dipiero said.

?[The symposium] is a catalyst to the work we do and shows significant progress in in humanistic studies,? History Professor Richard Kaeuper said. ?Having world-renowned scholars will boost interest as well as give recognition to how important the humanities are to students and the university. To students this is a validation of their studies.?

?It?s one of the banes of being a humanities major that I have sort of accepted,? said senior and American History and literature double major Nicole St. James said. ?UR is well-known for its top-notch science programs and often times the humanities seem underrepresented.?

?People gloss over them because they aren?t as research based,? Olufemi Watson, a health and medical communications interdepartmental major, said. ?Nine times out of ten no one is giving donations to them. This was the perfect avenue to generate new enthusiasm for the humanities both within the student body and the faulty.?

Ferrari is a Rochester native and graduate from the College of Arts and Sciences in 1970 with a bachelor?s degree in science cum laude, and a graduate from the School of Medicine and Dentistry with a medical degree in 1974. He serves the University as a trustee and a member of the Meliora Challenge Campaign Cabinet.
Ferrari and his wife are also Charter Members of the George Eastman Circle.

?The study of the humanities provides people with the ability to appreciate beauty and better appreciate life,? Farrari, who first took interest in the arts when he took a course in Medieval and Renaissance era architecture and art, said. ?The arts have relevance to solving today?s problems when that knowledge is brought together with science and other disciplines.?

He added that art helped to keep him grounded through his rigorous studies in science and medicine.

Johnson is a member of the class of 2013.

The only thing that makes sense is to try to grow things that will actually thrive in the prevailing conditions. Trying to turn land that is not really suitable for arable crops into land that *is* suitable for arable crops is doomed to expensive failure. Now, the first problem with Africa is that cutting down forests to provide arable land has allowed what soil there was to wash or blow away, depending on whether it's getting deluged with rain or dried into powder with the sun. The first thing is not to worry too much about importing huge amounts of petrochemical-derived fertiliser, but to get irrigation working and grow green manure crops that will tie what little soil there is together, and provide some nutrients when they break down. The great thing about this is that you don't really care if the water is dirty - in fact, you *want* it to be a bit dirty, any sediment or sewage or dead animals will only make it work better. The more biomass you get in there, the better. Sure, it'll smell a bit horrible, but have you ever been near an organic farm when they're spreading the organic fertiliser out? Hint - you make organic fertiliser using cows, sheep and pigs.

A good solution would be to devise some way of processing sewage from towns into something that can be used as fertiliser. The difficulty is that allowing sewage to break down involves allowing human shit to break down, and that requires you to let bacteria multiply rapidly, and you tend to get predominantly E Coli bacteria when you do that. This isn't exactly what you want to fling onto your arable crops, and killing E Coli requires lots of chemicals or lots of heat. They've got a lot of sunshine, so maybe you could do something with that - a sort of solar steriliser to bake off the E Coli and give you a nice, dry, easy-to-handle compost.

Of course you're going to need to find some sort of livestock that thrive in these conditions, and goats do pretty well, but goats eat everything and will destroy ground-covering plants which is how we got into this mess in the first place. Hens would do pretty well, as long as you had a biggish grassy patch with plenty of bugs for them to eat. Cows would be good if you could get enough forage in for them initially, because there's nothing quite so good at turning poor grassland into fertile arable land as getting some sort of ruminant to eat the tough inedible grasses and pass them through that complex set of stomachs.

We can't afford the arable land for everyone to be vegetarian, and when the oil runs out the situation will get worse. We *all* need to plan now and act soon.

So don?t be too quick to attribute rough patches to being a blended family ? what you?re experiencing may have a different source. And avoid blaming the past or a non-custodial birth parent. The 24-bed facility received 5 stars, the highest overall rating, from the federal government?s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services,?according to a news report at http://health.usnews.com/senior-housing/nursing-homes/fl?page=3. A facility?s overall rating is geared to its?performance in health inspections, nurse staffing, and medical care.

Inbreeding did not kill mammoths

The last known population of woolly mammoths did not "inevitably" die out because of inbreeding and lack of genetic diversity, a study suggests.

Scientists used techniques normally used to tackle crime scenes to carry out DNA analysis of samples taken from Wrangel Island in the Arctic Ocean.

They said that it was more likely that human activity or environmental factors killed off the healthy creatures.

Their work is published in the journal Molecular Ecology.

Although mammoths generally died out and disappeared from mainland Eurasia and North America around 10,000 years ago, about 500-1,000 mammoths continued to survive on Wrangel Island for a further 6,000 years.

The 7,000 sq km Wrangel is about 140km from the Russian mainland.

Scientists working together in the UK and Sweden also say their research could have immense implications for modern-day conservation programmes.

They examined bones, teeth and tusks from the island and compared these with samples found in Chukotka in north-east Siberia.

Report co-author Dr Love Dalen from the department of molecular systematics at the Swedish Museum of Natural History told the BBC the team had been working on the study since 2008.

He said: "We wanted to find out why these mammoths became extinct.

"Wrangel Island is not that big and it was initially thought that such a small population could have suffered problems of inbreeding and a lack of genetic diversity."

He said many previous studies of mammoth DNA had focused on using mitochondrial DNA - genetic information which is passed down on the maternal line.

As cells contain multiple copies of the mitochondrial genome, this DNA is easier to extract from ancient remains than the DNA found in the nucleus of cells.

"But the problem is mammoths don't display that much genetic variation - especially towards the end of their line," Dr Dalen explained.

"We decided to focus on microsatellites (repeated sequences in the DNA) to compare genetic fingerprints of each individual mammoth. This gave us access to nuclear DNA and gave us far stronger results."

He said that during the ice age, the total mammoth population in Eurasia dipped from tens of thousands to very few.

Dr Dalen added: "The DNA investigations found there was a 30% loss in genetic diversity as the population levels dropped - but that was to be expected.

"But when we examined the samples from the island, there reached a point when this reached a plateau and there was no more loss. This stage continued until the creatures became extinct.

"This therefore rejects the inbreeding theory. The mammoths on the island were isolated for nearly 6,000 years but yet managed to maintain a stable population."

The report concluded that the island was large enough for the creatures and so the final extinction was "not a delayed outcome of an inevitable process" such as inbreeding.

"This suggests that the final extinction was caused by a rapid change in the mammoths' environment, such as the arrival of humans or a change in climate, rather than a gradual decline in population size," the study concludes.

Dr Dalen said further investigation focusing on finding the last few woolly mammoths was needed but added: "If humans hunted them to extinction, I would expect us to find evidence of that. I'm personally leaning towards environmental change."

The researchers - who studied 76 samples altogether - also used a computational approach to investigate the population size on the island and how the genetic make-up of the creatures had changed over the years.

The team found that there was a sharp decease in the numbers of mammoths in north-east Siberia during the Pleistocene/Holocene transition (about 12,000 years ago). But the group concluded this was likely to be because the Wrangel Island mammoths became increasingly isolated as the sea levels rose around them.

Dr Dalen said: "We took a statistical approach to the genetics and data. We found that there were at least 500-1,000 mammoths at any one time living on the island before they died out.

Significant moment

He said this had immense implications for current research.

"What's really interesting is that maintaining 500 effective individuals is a very common target in conservation programmes.

"Our results therefore support the idea that such an effective population size is enough to maintain genetic diversity for thousands of years.

"These mammoths did fine with what was originally considered to be a small number," he said.

The scientists' work has been reviewed by evolutionary geneticist and University College London Professor Mark Thomas.

He said they had produced a significant moment in mammoth research.

"They have carried out the detailed research in the way it needs to be done but hadn't yet been done before.

"They examined the DNA of multiple samples and they showed that by having a constant size population, the Wrangel Island mammoths were not just doomed to die.

"Something happened to kill all of them - but what that is we do not know yet. That is the next step," he said.

Reworked version of Duqu worm found in Iran

A new variant of the mysterious Duqu worm has been spotted in Iran by researchers from the security firm Symantec, marking the re-emergence of the close cousin of the Stuxnet cyberweapon after five months of dormancy.

The finding indicates that the unknown creators of Stuxnet ? suspected by many to be the intelligence services of the U.S., of Israel or of both ? are still at work.

In a Symantec blog posting Tuesday, the company identified a new component of the malware, a driver used to load Duqu onto computers when they restart. Analyzing the driver's code ?"only one small part of the overall attack code" ? Symantec's researchers found that the malware authors had reworked it to better evade detection by security products.

Duqu's builders also changed its encryption algorithm and rigged the malware loader to pose as a Microsoft driver. (The old driver was signed with a stolen Microsoft certificate.)

"Although we do not have all of the information regarding this infection, the emergence of this new file does show that the attackers are still active," Symantec wrote.

First discovered in September 2011, but bearing code indicating it was created in 2007, Duqu is closely related to the Stuxnet worm, which in the summer of 2010 infected and crippled Iran's Natanz nuclear-fuel processing facility.?

Duqu's true intentions are unclear. Some security experts believe it is designed to steal data from critical industrial-control systems in Iran and Europe, similar to the energy facilities Stuxnet targeted; others believe it is meant to the steal authentication certificates that websites use to verify their identities.

Whatever its intent, countries including Iran, Sudan, India, Vietnam, Ukraine, Switzerland, France and the Netherlands have confirmed Duqu infections. Just days ago, researchers at another security firm, Kaspersky Lab, identified the mysterious programming language used to create part of Duquafter appealing to the larger security community for help.

6. Finding and removing polyps prevents some people from ever getting colon cancer.

7. Screening can result in the detection and removal of colorectal polyps before they become cancerous.

8. Colon cancer can be prevented with routine screenings, a healthy diet and an active lifestyle.

9. Even though colorectal testing should begin at age 50, education about colorectal screening can begin NOW!
