Clinton A Lowe, president of Georgia Game Developers Association (http://www.ggda.org/), and Andrew Greenberg, conference organizer welcomed over 2200 participants to the ?fastest-growing, coolest tradeshow for the video and digital game industries? this past weekend, October 7- 9, 2011 at the Northeast Marriott in Atlanta, Georgia: SIEGE CON 2011, Southern Interactive Entertainment & Game Expo (http://www.siegecon.net/SIEGE2011/) This year?s conference was dedicated to the memory of Steve Jobs, Apple?s co-founder and late CEO, who revolutionized the technology, music, and graphic arts industries by making technology ?beautiful.?
Law2sm founder, Deborah Gonzalez, attended and participated during the conference.? Some highlights are below.
Gamification (the use and integration of game mechanics into other processes) and serious games had its own track alongside game design, the business of the gaming industry, and programming, among others.? Key issues such as nomenclature, business and educational uses of games, cost and other resistance factors, were discussed and explored by such luminaries as Richard Hilleman, chief creative officer at Entertainment Arts (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3366950751295020007) and Ben Sawyer, co-founder of the Games for Health Project (http://www.gamesforhealth.org/).
The movement of games on social networking sites was highlighted during the Social Game Design panel on Friday evening.? A conversation and Q&A with Deborah Gonzalez and Marshall Seese, Jr of Mowgli Games (http://mowgligames.com/) the session covered what are social games, what key design elements do successful games have, the recent study by RockYou identifying four social gamer types, some business and legal issues, and even how gamers can make the world a better place (thanks to Jane McGonigal?s TED speech ? http://www.ted.com/talks/jane_mcgonigal_gaming_can_make_a_better_world.html). BTW, Mowgli Games was introducing the beta version of their new upcoming social game ? Songster, the ?first and only collaborative music creation game on Facebook? (http://mowgligames.com/songster).
The legal side of the gaming industry was very prominent ? at least three different sessions looked at issues related to intellectual property issues and top legal pitfalls facing gaming companies.? The last session on Sunday afternoon, Game Law 2.0, brought together three legal experts, TJ Mihill, of Cannon Mihill & Winkles (http://www.cmw-law.com/), Rob Hassett, of Internetlegal.com (http://www.internetlegal.com/), and Deborah Gonzalez, of Law2sm (www.law2sm.com), who discussed the hottest legal issues in the industry.? Topics included: copyright assignments and work for hire; virtual currency concerns; the difference between a sweepstakes and a contest run online; the current patent wars going on in Europe with Apple; and more.
GGDA, via SEIGE CON, manages to bring together a wealth of industry knowledge and experienced professionals every year, and has done so for the past five years.? Law2sm looks forward to continuing to work with them and the interactive and gaming community as they continue to develop, especially in the social media context.
