Revised 'Vices' Musical, with Choreography by Andrew Palermo, Opens July 28 in Aspen, CO (Playbill)

Colorado audiences at Theatre Aspen will discover something new and daring July 28-Aug. 20 with the sexually-charged dance-music play Vices: A Love Story, completely reimagined by director Amanda Dehnert since its earlier Florida premiere.

Choreographer Andrew Palermo is also new to the project since its 2009 debut by Caldwell Theatre Company. The authors have revised the piece since that time.

Even though it's in repertory with Theatre Aspen's Annie at the Hurst Theatre in Rio Grande Park in Aspen, Vices is not aimed at kids. With story by Michael Heitzman & Ilene Reid, and music and lyrics by Susan Draus, Everett Bradley, Heitzman and Reid, Vices is billed this way: "Four singers and a hot dance couple power this brand new musical, featuring original songs that are sophisticated, surprising and simply touching. Vices follows the dancers' story from The Beginning, and explores the distractions and wrong turns that threaten to destroy their happiness."

Theatre Aspen artistic director Paige Price told Playbill.com, "Choreographer Andrew Palermo brought this project to my attention, so I went down to see the Caldwell production. After meeting with writer-composers Ilene Reid and Michael Heitzman, I got excited about how a production at Theatre Aspen would help further develop the show. We are just starting to do new work, and after listening to the music ? which was arresting and fresh ? I frankly became a little obsessed with getting Vices here. The combination of vocal and dance artistry that this show requires sets it apart from a lot of new shows."

Music director and co-writer Susan Draus told Playbill.com, "The Theatre Aspen production is the first time we are able to explore the media component of the show that we've always wanted to try. Director Amanda Dehnert has amazing ideas for projections to help tie the story together and create surprises."

Co-writer Bradley said, "Since the Caldwell, we have written a brand new opening number which we're very excited to test at Theatre Aspen."

Co-writer Heitzman added, "Since the story of Vices is told through main characters who express their emotional arc through dance, Aspen will provide us an opportunity to continue to define that relationship. We're very grateful to Paige Price for having the courage to take a risk on this new work."

The company includes Danielle Greaves ("Rescue Me," Rent, Hairspray), remaining from the original cast, plus Destan Owens (Rent, Chicago, Smokey Joe's Caf?), Catherine Brookman (Hair) and Jason Reiff (Les Miserables). The dancers, upon which the show centers, are portrayed by Samantha Harvey (dre.dance company member) and Matthew Steffens (Women on the Verge?, Promises, Promises).

The design team includes projection designer Aaron Rhyne, set designer Tristan Jeffers, costume designer Jessica Ford, lighting designers Jeff Croiter and Grant Yeager and sound designer David Thomas, with additional designs by Acme Sound Partners.
