Virginia gives London raise, contract extension

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Virginia football coach Mike London has won a two-year contract extension and a raise, increasing his annual salary to $2.1 million.

News of the contract restructuring came Friday from Atlanta, where London is preparing the Cavaliers for their first bowl appearance since the 2007 season. Virginia faces Auburn in the Chick-fil-A Bowl on Saturday.

The two-year addition will extend London's contract through 2016. The raise increases his salary by $400,000 annually. London's extension also includes a longevity bonus effective January 2015.

Virginia athletics director Craig Littlepage said the assistant football coaches on London's staff will also see their pay increase. He said contract changes are critical to maintaining the program's momentum.

London was named the Atlantic Coach Conference's coach of the year after leading the Cavaliers to an 8-4 record.

NYC mayor says work on 9/11 museum has stalled

Photo credit: AP | Visitors walk around the National September 11 Memorial, in New York. (Dec. 29, 2011)

NEW YORK - Work on a planned museum at the World Trade Center has ground to a halt because of a financial dispute, and there is now no possibility it will open on time next year, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Thursday.

The underground museum commemorating victims of the 9/11 attacks was scheduled to open in September on the 11th anniversary of the disaster, a year after the opening of a memorial at the site that has already drawn 1 million visitors.

But in recent months, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum foundation has been fighting with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey over who is responsible for paying millions of dollars in infrastructure costs related to the project.

The Port Authority, which owned the trade center and is building the museum, claims that the foundation owes it $300 million. The foundation claims that the authority actually owes it $140 million, because of delays in the project.

The dispute has been simmering for some time, and some details of the work slowdown were reported in November, but Thursday marked the first time that the mayor and other officials have acknowledged that the fight would mean the museum will not open in 2012.

"There is no chance of it being open on time. Work has basically stopped," Bloomberg said. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on a recent radio program that the Port Authority was "on the verge" of suing the foundation, but both the mayor and the Port Authority said Thursday that negotiations over the matter continue.

"I'm sure we are going to work something out with the Port Authority," Bloomberg said. "They've got a difficult budget situation. I'm sympathetic to that."

Despite security hurdles and ongoing construction, tourists from around the world have already made the memorial at the site a regular stop on their visits to New York City. Since it opened to the public Sept. 12, more than 1 million people have visited the memorial plaza, officials said.

The site now draws about 10,000 visitors a day, which would put it on pace to match or exceed the 3.5 million who visit the Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building annually.

Tourists ? some reverent, some just there to gawk ? have long been a staple at ground zero, but until this summer the closest they could get were the high fences that ringed a bustling construction zone where the twin towers once stood.

Negotiating fences and legions of construction workers is still part of any trip to the memorial. All visitors must reserve free tickets in advance and pass through a security screening. But the hurdles haven't stopped people from coming. Memorial officials said visitors have hailed from all 50 states and 120 countries.

Anthoula Katsimatides, a memorial board member whose brother, John, was killed at the trade center, said the attention is welcome.

"It truly touches my heart and reaffirms the importance of this memorial to know a million people have already come here to honor and pay respects to my brother and the thousands of other loved ones who died in the attacks," she said in a written statement.

Visitors to the site today can walk on a tree-covered plaza and see the two massive pools that sit in the footprints of the fallen towers. Each pool is ringed by waterfalls, and a parapet engraved with the names of the nearly 3,000 people who died on 9/11 and in a 1993 bomb attack.

Visitors can also get a close-up look on construction of One World Trade Center, now 90 stories high and on its way to being the nation's tallest building.

The original design for the rebuilt trade center included four other office towers, a transit hub and a performing arts center, as well as the memorial and museum.

Two towers and the transit hub are under construction. On Thursday, the memorial foundation set up a board of directors for the planned performing arts center, for the first time. The board includes trade center developer Larry Silverstein, Disney executive Zenia Mucha and Brookfield Properties co-chair John Zuccotti.

More than $100 million was set aside for the center by a downtown rebuilding agency and architect Frank Gehry was hired to design it, but private fundraising never began. Only one of four arts organizations originally chosen to anchor the center is still planning on moving in and officials say construction wouldn't begin for several years.

Rutgers shocks No. 10 Florida in double overtime

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Mike Rice has been waiting for his kids at Rutgers to grow up, buy into the system and start showing the talent he knew they had. They finally did against No. 10 Florida.

Freshman Eli Carter scored a season-high 31 points and hit the go-ahead basket in the second overtime as Rutgers stunned the Gators 85-83 after rallying from deficits in regulation and the first overtime.

"This is what happens when you believe," Rice said. "This is what happens when you don't think the impossible is impossible. This is what happens when you follow the formula, when you play for one another. (We) had the will and the determination."

Carter showed tremendous leadership and made the tough shots. He finished 12 of 24 from the field, and 2 of 5 on 3-pointers, hitting from long range to tie it with 18 seconds left in the first overtime.

"My teammates had confidence in me," Carter said. "I took the big shot and made it."

The Scarlet Knights (8-5) also came back from a seven-point deficit late in regulation in posting their biggest win since knocking off No. 9 Villanova at home last season.

"He reminds me of Bernard King," fellow freshman Jerome Seagears said of Carter. "He could have had 62 or 63 tonight if he was open."

Erving Walker had a chance to tie the game for the Gators (11-2) in the final seconds, but his off-balance attempt from the foul line hit off the rim.

Scarlet Knights fans stormed the court to celebrate in a game billed as the return of former Rutgers star and current Gator Mike Rosario to Piscataway.

Dane Miller added 16 points, Myles Mack had 14 and Seagears 13 for Rutgers, which won its fourth straight game and snapped the Gators' five-game winning streak.

"I thought the difference in the game, in my opinion, was I thought their guys played the right way," said Florida coach Billy Donovan, who felt his team got off to a good start and then showed only brief flashes after that.

Kenny Boynton matched his season high with 26 points for Florida. Bradley Beal added 15 and Erik Murphy had 14 points and eight rebounds for Florida, which was playing its first game at the loud and intimidating Rutgers Athletic Center.

"They wanted it more than us," Boynton said. "We made too many mistakes. It wasn't the underclassmen. It was the upperclassmen. That's disappointing. I take full responsibility."

Carter, whose previous high was 21 points, put the Scarlet Knights ahead for good at 80-78 with a shot in the lane. He was fouled on the play but missed the free throw.

After Beal missed a drive on the left side and Boynton missed a 3-point attempt, Carter scored inside again for an 82-78 edge.

Beal cut the Gators' deficit to a point on a 3-pointer with 1:18 to go, but Mack came right back with a 3-pointer with 55 seconds left for an 85-81 lead.

A floater by Walker with 44.8 seconds left cut the margin to a basket and Florida got a final shot when Rutgers was called for a shot clock violation with 8.7 seconds left.

Rutgers knocked the ball out of bounds in the backcourt with 4.3 seconds left and Walker could not connect after taking the inbound pass and driving to the foul line for his final shot.

Rutgers forced the first overtime by rallying from a seven-point deficit in the final 2:48 of regulation and the came from three points down in the first overtime with Carter tying the game at 76 with a 3-pointer with 18.2 seconds to play.

Florida turned the ball over in the waning seconds and Mack's 40-footer at the buzzer wasn't close.

The Scarlet Knights trailed 64-57 late in regulation before scoring the final seven points, aided by two Gators turnovers. Mack started the comeback with a 3-pointer, Carter scored in the lane and Miller tied the game with 45.7 seconds to go with a layup.

After Walker's drive down the lane with about 15 seconds left hit nothing, the Scarlet Knights blew a chance to win. Mack seemed to lose track of time and his off-balance shot never had a chance.

Florida had seemingly taken command when Boynton scored on a fast break after Murphy blocked a shot with Rutgers up 55-54. Then Boynton came back on the next possession to hit a 3-pointer for a 59-55 lead. The lead eventually grew to 64-57 on a three-point play by Boynton with 2:48 to play.

Rosario averaged 16.4 points in his first two seasons with the Scarlet Knights before transferring to Florida. He sat out last season and has been coming off the bench for the Gators. He scored five points in 14 minutes in his return and he was booed every time he touched the ball or cheered every time he missed a shot.

During warmups there were chants of "Rosario is a bum" and "Jersey hates you."

The only other cheers he got were when he missed a shot or when he was called along with Miller for a double technical foul with 54.7 second left in the half.

Sinead O'Connor and Barry Herridge: It's Already Over!

In sad news today, Sinead O'Connor and Barry Herridge are getting divorced.

If it seems like they just got married, it's because they did. On December 9!

It was a great 18-day run for the couple. To put that in perspective, Kim Kardashian's marriage to Kris Humphries lasted four times longer than these two.

Why the change of heart, Sinead? The singer explained on her website:

Sinead O'Connor, Husband

"Dear friends, I had for reasons u (sic) will all understand, wished to keep this private but have been told today it is to be leaked in the next few days despite my best efforts ... So I must now leak it myself so as the record is straight."

"Within 3 hours of the ceremony being over the marriage was kyboshed by the behaviour of certain people in my husband's life. And also by a bit of a wild ride I took us on looking for a bit of a smoke of weed for me (sic) wedding night as I don't drink."

"My husband was enormously wounded and very badly effected (sic) by that experience and also by the attitude of those close to him toward our marriage."

"It became apparent to me that if he were to stay with me he would be losing too much to bear... A woman wants to be a joy to her husband."

"So... U (sic) love someone? Set them free."

Words to live by, people. Words to live by.

Beyoncé's Year Of Change Had Us Counting To 4

Our #9 Newsmaker of 2011 touched fans with a VMA baby bump reveal and her most personal album yet.
By John Mitchell

Beyoncé
Photo: Getty Images

It was a year of change for the long-reigning queen of mainstream R&B, both personally and professionally. Having taken a year off following the 86-date I Am ... Sasha Fierce Tour, Beyoncé re-emerged on the music scene late this spring with the single "Run the World (Girls)." While "Girls" fell squarely in the Beyoncé canon, what she had coming with the rest of her album 4 represented a dynamic and risky change for the superstar.

"My life was award shows and tour buses and hotels, and it kind of goes by so fast. You're getting awards and people are saying how much they respect you and I couldn't even hear it anymore," she revealed in the documentary "Year of 4," which debuted on MTV in June. "I'm just thinking about the next shoot. I'm just thinking about the next video, the next single, the next tour."

She craved change and knew that meant the time had come for some shake-ups in her professional and personal life. The first major change came in March, when she parted ways with her longtime manager, father Matthew Knowles. There were rumors that the split was acrimonious, though both Beyoncé and Matthew insisted the decision was mutual and only "on a business level."

In command of her own career for the first time, Beyoncé began opening up in ways fans had never before seen. 4, which debuted at #1 this summer, turned out to be the most revelatory and personal album of her career, a ballad-heavy meditation on the bliss and impact of being with the one you love. When she did kick up the tempo, the results were joyous jams peppered with blasting horns ("Countdown") and heavy on '90s nostalgia ("Love on Top").

It was during a blistering performance of the latter at the MTV Video Music Awards that Beyoncé revealed one of the biggest surprises of the year. With the final words of "Love on Top" still echoing through Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre, she dropped her mic and unbuttoned her sparkling jacket to reveal a small baby bump, which she rubbed joyously, wearing an ear-to-ear smile that said it all. The crowd went wild, of course, and when the camera cut to Jay-Z, the proud papa-to-be saluted his beautiful wife as pal and the Throne collaborator Kanye West practically jumped on his back with excitement.

Only a star of Queen B's magnitude could make an announcement that set Twitter records and helped the VMAs get their best ratings ever without actually saying a word.

When it comes to the real Beyoncé, the star has always played her cards close to the vest, but this year she brought us in closer. In "Year of 4," she showcased her tireless work ethic, inviting fans into the studio and dance rehearsals. Later, at her intimate dates this summer at New York's Roseland Ballroom, she revealed that record execs feared her debut solo album, Dangerously in Love, had no top-10 hits when it went on to have four, including #1s "Crazy in Love" and "Baby Boy."

So many pop stars seem trapped in time, eternally chasing a hit to beat their last, but not B. For her, 2011 was a year of evolution, one of growth both personal and artistic. She's long been a force to be reckoned with, but now, managing herself and with a new family life in the offing, she is setting the stage for something new and exciting. That she's opened herself up so much to fans is heartening because now we know that no matter where life takes her, we'll be invited along for the ride.

MTV continues our Best of 2011 coverage by looking back at the biggest pop-culture stories of the year. As we count down the newsmakers that mattered to you most, also check out our Best Artists, Best Songs, Best MTV Live Performances and Best EDM Artists of 2011.

What automotive ads went viral in 2011?

It's been a serious year for automotive advertising. From dancing hamsters to big-name talent like Jennifer Lopez, Eminem and Dr. Dre, we saw automakers go all out in an attempt to lure buyers to their showrooms. But which spots garnered the most eyes? SkiddMark.com has taken the time to rank the top ten most popular automotive commercials of 2011 on YouTube, and it likely comes as no surprise that Volkswagen took the top spot with its The Force commercial. The spot debuted during the Super Bowl and featured an adorable Darth Vader. The combination was good enough to win the company a staggering 47.5 million views and over 4.8 million shares.

By contrast, Ken Block's Gymkhana Four drug home 13.1 million views and 2.1 million shares to take home second place. That's a massive gap, though Block also took the fifth and eighth place spots with his Gymkhana Three and Two, respectively. Not too shabby for selling sneakers.

Other winners included the Team Hot Wheels Yellow Driver's World Record Jump and the Chrysler Eminem Super Bowl Commercial. Head over to SkiddMark.com for the full list.

* A third infant in the United States has tested positive for Cronobacter, a bacteria that has sometimes been linked to rare illnesses in newborns and has been found in milk-based powdered baby formula.

This has spurred a probe into baby formula, including Enfamil by Mead Johnson Nutrition Co. (MJN.N), although the baby had not consumed this.

* A delay has been won by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in its securities fraud lawsuit against Citigroup Inc (C.N), as the regulator tries to appeal a judge's decision to reject its $285 million settlement with the bank.

'Forrest Gump' to be preserved in US film registry

(AP) ? Forrest Gump's oft-imitated line, "My momma always said, 'Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get' " will be immortalized among the nation's treasures in the world's largest archive of film, TV and sound recordings.

The Library of Congress on Wednesday announced that 1994's smash hit "Forrest Gump" starring Tom Hanks was one of 25 films chosen to be included this year in the National Film Registry.

The oldest reels are silent films both from 1912. "The Cry of the Children" is about the pre-World War I child labor reform movement and "A Cure for Pokeritis" features the industry's earliest comic superstar John Bunny.

Also from that silent era is Charlie Chaplin's first full-length feature, "The Kid," from 1921.

Under the terms of the National Film Preservation Act, each year the Librarian of Congress names 25 films that are "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant. This year, 2,228 films were nominated.

"These films are selected because of their enduring significance to American culture," Librarian of Congress James H. Billington said in a statement. "Our film heritage must be protected because these cinematic treasures document our history and culture and reflect our hopes and dreams."

For each title, the Library of Congress Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation works to ensure that the film is preserved for future generations. That comes either by the Library's massive motion-picture preservation program or through collaborating with other archives, motion-picture studios and independent filmmakers.

The most recent film chosen is "Forrest Gump," which won six Academy Awards including for Best Picture.

Also starring in that movie about an everyman who ended up being part of the most iconic events of the 1960s and 1970s was Sally Field. Her perhaps most famous role playing "Norma Rae" in the movie of the same name from 1979 also made the list. She won an Academy Award for her portrayal of a poorly educated single mother who fought successfully to make her Southern textile mill a union shop.

Making the list is the animated Disney classic, "Bambi," made in 1942 about a deer's life in the forest, "The Big Heat" from 1953, a post-war noir film, and 1991's disturbing, "The Silence of the Lambs," which won Oscars for stars Jody Foster and Sir Anthony Hopkins. Hopkins plays cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter in the psychological and violent thriller.

The original "War of the Worlds" from 1953 also will be preserved along with "Porgy and Bess," ''Stand and Deliver" and John Ford's epic Western, "The Iron Horse," from 1924.

Lesser known films were chosen for their significance to the art.

"A Computer Animated Hand" from 1972 is by Pixar Animation Studios co-founder Ed Catmull. The one-minute film that is one of the earliest examples of 3D computer animation displays the hand turning, opening and closing, pointing at the viewer and flexing its fingers.

Making the list were notable documentaries as well.

"Crisis: Behind a Presidential Commitment," focuses on Gov. George Wallace's attempt to prevent two African-American students from enrolling in the University of Alabama and the response of President John F. Kennedy. "Growing Up Female" from 1971 was one of the first films to come from the women's liberation movement.

Also included was "The Negro Soldier," produced by Frank Capra. It showed the heroism of blacks in the nation's wars and became mandatory viewing for all soldiers from spring 1944 until World War II's end.

The 12 Days of Christmas: Sports Edition

On the third day of Sports-Mas, let me give to thee: Two of the Big Three.

In July 2010, ESPN aired a one hour program called "The Decision," dedicated to LeBron James' announcement that he would be taking his talents to South Beach. As if an unprecedented cable announcement wasn't going to create enough pressure for the emotional fragile forward, then he went and guaranteed the Heat would win eight championships or more.?

To clarify: Nobody is "hating" on LeBron. Dude was completely within his his rights to go wherever the crap he wanted to after serving his time in Cleveland. But when you leave your home state in favor of Miami and guarantee eight championships, you better dang well deliver in the playoffs.?

Well we all know that LeBron didn't deliver in the playoffs, particularly in the fourth quarter against the Mavericks when it mattered most. No. 6 was more than willing to take cheap shots at a flu-ridden Dirk Nowitzki when the Heat were still up in the series, but his postgame presser following Game 6 was vintage LeBron. Essentially saying: "Yeah, maybe my team lost in the NBA finals to a less talented team, but tomorrow I'm going to wake up a millionaire and you're going to wake up a loser."

In a December 2011 interview with ESPN's Rachel Nichols, LeBron showed a genuine remorse for his actions and how things went down regarding his departure from Cleveland. Personally, I thought his responses were genuine and that he legitimately regrets some of the spectacle and the hurt...I guess we'll see in 2012. ??

GOP Rivals Give Last Pitches in Iowa

Mitt Romney returned to the airwaves in Iowa Monday with a new ad that takes a more positive tone than the Republican presidential candidate's supporters had been going with before the Christmas break, talking about making government "simpler and smaller and smarter."

"It is a moral imperative for America to stop spending more money than we take in," Romney says in the ad in which he touts his former role as chief executive. "The experience of balancing budgets is desperately needed in Washington and I will take it there."

The ad comes as the former Massachusetts governor -- and all his GOP rivals -- prepare their final sales pitches -- bus tours and all -- ahead of next Tuesday's first-in-the-nation caucuses.

For now Romney is slightly behind Texas Rep. Ron Paul in an average of Iowa polls taken before Christmas, but the statistical dead heat -- which, if the polls' margins of error were reversed, could conceivably be a statistical landslide -- shows Paul with 22.3 percent compared to Romney with 21 percent.?

According to the Real Clear Politics average, Newt Gingrich has slipped to 14 percent in Iowa while Rick Perry on the rise with 12 percent.

Perry also has a new ad out, touting his "outsider" status and taking aim at frontrunner Paul by asking if Washington is the problem, why trust a congressman to fix it??

Also in the race are Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who former Arkansas governor and 2008 Iowa GOP victor Mike Huckabee said Sunday could be the sleeper candidate in the caucuses.

Santorum has been banking on the Iowa caucuses to give him some national legitimacy. Having spent considerable time in the Hawkeye State visiting all 99 counties, he spent Monday going pheasant shooting with well-known and socially conservative Iowa Rep. Steve King. ?

The buzz around Santorum is noteworthy, as his climb steadies while Gingrich's falls. Still, many voters are undecided ahead of the Jan. 3 first-in-the-nation contest, though it won't take much to win among the six candidates vying in the state, particularly if only 100,000 Iowans go to the caucuses -- an all-evening affair very unlike the in-and-out touchscreen vote in many states.?

"When you go to a caucus, you drive out for a cold evening in a drafty school house or church fellowship hall, you are there for two or three hours, maybe longer, and you're going to have to stand up in front of your neighbors, in front of your pastor, your doctor, your kid's teachers. You are going to stand up there and you are going to have to declare 'I'm for candidate A.' And everybody in neighborhood knows who you stood for," Huckabee said on "Fox News Sunday," describing the process.?

Huckabee's success four years ago is attributed to his massive organization. He had a mailing list of 420,000 evangelicals in Iowa, he went town-to-town recruiting homeschoolers and Christian youth groups.?

Nothing close to that has happened this time as candidates rely much more on commercials, debates, social media and cable television to cover the ground that go with fewer meetings. Huckabee noted that could be a disadvantage.

"There may only be 110,000 people voting in the caucus rather than half a million that might be in the primary. But the point is, those 100,000 represent the hardcore political activists and that's why the polls don't necessarily indicate what's going to happen because polls, you pick up the phone and you say, yes, I kind of like so-and-so. Caucus, you got to drive and stand up and be counted for the candidate. It's a very different kind of atmosphere," he said.

With 1,700 locations holding caucuses statewide, voters will hear five-minute speeches from each campaign's representatives, then write in their choice. If more than 120,000 show up, that would be a record turnout. Weather is a contributing factor, and forecasts today show a mild Jan. 3.?

If a candidate has signed up 40,000 supporters to attend the caucuses, that's an easy win, which is part of the reason Paul is the candidate to watch. He has a devoted following that is organized and energized even though the Texas congressman is retracting racist sentiments that appeared in newsletters in the 1990s written under his name.

And if organization is the name of the game, it's Paul and Romney, in fact, who are the ones fully able to compete nationally.

But before that, they must win the expectations game in Iowa, and while Santorum could be the benefactor of persistence as well as late buzz, both Paul and Romney are playing it close to the vest.?

Paul, who is popular with conservatives, will return to Iowa this week to meet with supporters he has kept in touch with since his unsuccessful run in 2008. Romney, who has kept the state at arm's length for most of the year, is courting supporters in phone calls on Monday as well as a speech Tuesday evening.

But it's not time to count Gingrich out yet. Last week, he criticized the negative tone of the campaign, but now he's ready to take the challenge directly to Romney on the economy, an issue Romney has made central to his campaign.

Meanwhile, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman has bowed out of Iowa, keeping focus on New Hampshire, which votes in the first-in-the-nation primary one week after Iowa's caucuses.?

Islamists kill dozens in Nigeria Christmas bombs (Reuters)

ABUJA (Reuters) ? Islamist militants set off bombs across Nigeria on Christmas Day - three targeting churches including one that killed at least 27 people - raising fears that they are trying to ignite sectarian civil war.

The Boko Haram Islamist sect, which aims to impose sharia law across the country, claimed responsibility for the three church bombs, the second Christmas in a row the group has caused mass carnage with deadly bombings of churches. Security forces also blamed the sect for two other blasts in the north.

St Theresa's Catholic Church in Madala, a satellite town about 40 km (25 miles) from the center of the capital Abuja, was packed when the bomb exploded just outside.

"We were in the church with my family when we heard the explosion. I just ran out," Timothy Onyekwere told Reuters. "Now I don't even know where my children or my wife are. I don't know how many were killed but there were many dead."

Hours after the first bomb, blasts were reported at the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Church in the central, ethnically and religiously mixed town of Jos, and at a church in northern Yobe state at the town of Gadaka. Residents said many were wounded in Gadaka, but there were no immediate further details.

A suicide bomber killed four security officials at the State Security Service in one of the other bombs, which struck the northeastern town of Damaturu, police said. Residents heard two loud explosions and gunfire in the town.

A Reuters reporter at the church near Abuja saw the front roof had been destroyed, as had several houses nearby. Five burnt out cars were still smouldering. There were scenes of chaos, as shocked residents stared at the wreckage in disbelief.

"Mass just ended and people were rushing out of the church and suddenly I heard a loud sound: 'Gbam!' Cars were in flames and bodies littered everywhere," Nnana Nwachukwu told Reuters.

Father Christopher Barde, Assistant priest of the church, said: "The officials who counted told me they have picked up 27 bodies so far."

Police cordoned off the area around the church. Thousands of furious youths set up burning road blocks on the highway from Abuja leading to Nigeria's largely Muslim north.

Police and the military tried to disperse them by firing live rounds into the air with tear gas.

"We are so angry," shouted Kingsley Ukpabi, as a queue of hooting vehicles lined up behind his flaming barrage.

ATTACKS INCREASE

Boko Haram - which in the Hausa language spoken in northern Nigeria means "Western education is sinful" - is loosely modelled on the Taliban movement in Afghanistan.

It has emerged as the biggest security threat in Nigeria, a country of 160 million split evenly between Christians and Muslims, who for the most part live side by side in peace.

Its low level insurgency used to be largely confined to northeastern Nigeria, but it has struck several parts of the north, center and the capital Abuja this year.

Last Christmas Eve, a series of bomb blasts around Jos killed 32 people, and other people died in attacks on two churches in the northeast.

At the church near Abuja, a wounded man whose legs were almost shattered to pieces by the blast was loaded onto a stretcher near an ambulance by security services.

"I'll survive," he said in a hushed voice.

The blast in Jos, a tinderbox of ethnic and sectarian tensions that sometimes sees deadly clashes between Muslims and Christians, was accompanied by a shooting spree by militants, who exchanged fire with local police, said Charles Ezeocha, special taskforce spokesman for Jos.

"We lost one policeman and we have made four arrests. I think we can use them to get more information and work on that," he said. Police found four other explosive devices in Jos, which they deactivated, he added.

President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from the south who is struggling to contain the threat of Islamist militancy, called the incidents "unfortunate" but said Boko Haram would "not be (around) forever. It will end one day."

The White House condemned "this senseless violence and tragic loss of life on Christmas Day."

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also condemned the attacks and expressed his condolences "to the people of Nigeria and to the bereaved families."

"The Secretary-General calls once again for an end to all acts of sectarian violence in the country and reiterates his firm conviction that no objective sought can justify this resort to violence," a statement released by his office said.

Case audit reveals flaws in legal system - The Nation

Home ? national ? Case audit reveals flaws in legal system

Don Pathan
The Nation on Sunday
Pattani December 25, 2011 1:00 am

Speaking at a seminar on Saturday held to discuss a report that examined 100 legal cases audited by the Muslim Attorney Centre Foundation and the American Bar Association's Rule of Law Initiative, experts said the entire system needed to be seriously examined. Out of the 100 cases studied, 72 were dismissed, all on the grounds of insufficient evidence.

The vast majority of the suspects were charged with terrorism, unlike during the separatist conflict in the 1970s and 1980s, when militants were charged with treason.

Officials in the South can employ special legal regimes - Emergency Law and Martial Law - that permit detention for up to 37 days without formal charges. Suspects are virtually incommunicado the entire time.

The experts said that under Martial Law, 39 cases of torture and 27 cases of verbal abuse were reported. For those held under Emergency Law, 37 alleged to have been tortured, while 25 experienced verbal abuse. The same kind of treatment has also been reported under normal legal proceedings.

Most of the suspects were locked up during the cases, which can take anywhere from one to three years to reach a verdict.

Pairote Polpetch, a member of the Legal Reform Committee, said the problem lay with the authorities' unwillingness to question cases that were sensitive, which leads them to simply pass them on.

Moreover, the lengthy detention periods, which are not subject to any review, may lead to questionable and illegal interrogation tactics, such as torture, as the authorities try to obtain information from the suspects, Pairote said.

International Crisis Group's Rungrawee Chalerm-pinyorat asked whether this was a problem exclusively for the South or for the entire country.

Moreover, quoting a senior police officer, Rungrawee said there was a feeling that without these special laws, rogue officials may employ controversial and illegal means, such as abduction and murder of suspects.

The violence in the deep South was political in nature but the Thai legal process did not take this into consideration, she said.

The government also employed Article 21 to give an incentive to insurgents to lay down their arms. But the scheme failed to attract much participation because, according to senior government officials in the region, the militants see themselves as winning. Such a process is best reserved for a post-conflict period and should be used as a way to reintegrate the insurgents into society.

Pairote said judges and the Office of the Attorney General should be more vigorous in screening and demanding more solid evidence from the law-enforcement officers. "They can help filter the process at the early stage instead of waiting until the legal process exhausts itself," he said.

One senior officer in the region said there was concern that many suspects who had been locked up for a year or two would come out with extreme anger and then join the movement.

Participants urged the authorities to investigate allegations of torture and abuse, saying faith in government depended upon the sincerity of officials and the justice system.

Troy University unveils plans for new campus

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - Troy University is planning a new riverfront campus in Phenix City that features a statue of a 20-foot Trojan.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports (http://bit.ly/tXXbuv) that Chancellor Jack Hawkins unveiled the plans at a news conference on Thursday.

Hawkins said the 30,000-square-foot academic building will house the school's international business and risk-management programs. The Trojan statue will also be donated by a Chinese artist.

Phenix City will also chip in $2 million over the next five years to help establish the new campus on the city's riverfront. The school has also raised $9 million to complete the project.

Phenix City Councilman Max Wilkes said the new school would be a cornerstone for the city's development. It is set to open in spring 2012.

(AP) ? Hundreds of Christian faithful, defying lashing rains and wind, celebrated Christmas Mass at Jesus' traditional birthplace on Sunday, spirits high despite the gloomy weather.

Worshippers dressed in their holiday best rushed under cover of umbrellas into St. Catherine's Church on Manger Square, leaving the plaza, with its 50-foot-tall (15-meter-tall) Christmas tree, deserted. The church was packed, and the overflow crowd waited eagerly in an arched corridor for a chance to enter.

Inside, supplicants, some dressed in the traditional attire of foreign lands, raised their voices in prayer, kissed a plaster statue of a baby Jesus and took communion. St. Catherine's is attached to the smaller Church of the Nativity, which is built over a grotto where devout Christians believe Jesus was born.

"Lots of pilgrims from around the world are coming to be here on Christmas," said Don Moore, 41, a psychology professor from Berkeley, Calif., who came to Bethlehem with his family. "We wanted to be part of the action. This is the place, this is where it all started. It doesn't get any more special than that."

With turnout at its highest in more than a decade, proud Palestinian officials said they were praying the celebrations would bring them closer to their dream of independence.

Bethlehem, like the rest of the West Bank, had fallen onto hard times after the Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation broke out in late 2000.

Although civil affairs in the biblical town on Jerusalem's southeastern outskirts are run by Palestinian authorities, security control remains in the hands of Israel, which built a barrier around three sides of the town to keep Palestinian attackers out.

Palestinians say the barrier has badly hurt its economy, which depends heavily on tourism, by severely restricting movement in and out of the town.

But as the violence has subsided, tourists have returned in large numbers. An estimated 100,000 visitors streamed into Manger Square on Christmas Eve, up from 70,000 the previous year, according to the Israeli military's count.

With the barrier looming large over the celebrations in Bethlehem, Palestinians have tried to draw attention to their quest for an independent state with this year's Christmas slogan, "Palestine celebrating hope."

Late Saturday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told a meeting of Christian leaders that he is committed to reaching peace with Israel.

"I hope they will come back to their senses and understand that we are seekers of peace, not seekers of war or terrorism," said Abbas, a Muslim like most Palestinians. "The mosque, church and synagogue stand side by side in this Holy Land."

Israel had allowed about 500 members of Gaza's tiny Christian minority to travel through its territory to the West Bank to celebrate Christmas in Bethlehem. Most of Gaza's 3,000 Christians belong to the Greek Orthodox denomination, which celebrates Christmas next month.

Israel debates whether Armenian killings genocide

(AP)? JERUSALEM ? Over their prime minister's objections, Israeli lawmakers are debating a proposal to recognize the mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks as genocide.

Doing so would likely further strain already acrimonious relations with Turkey, which denies the genocide label and insists the massacres occurred in civil unrest as the Ottoman Empire collapsed during World War I, with losses on both sides.

An Israeli government official says Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu requested that Monday's debate be canceled. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not allowed to disclose the information.

Israel has previously stopped short of recognizing the killings of 1.5 million Armenians as a genocide.

In recent years, however, ties with Turkey have frayed badly.

Africa sets up world's most powerful radio telescope

The Karoo Array Telescope site in the Northern Cape will be operated remotely from Cape Town. Picture: AFP

AFRICA has long been a magnet for archaeologists. Now South Africa wants to draw leading astrophysicists to the continent as well with the world's most powerful radio telescope, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), an instrument that would be able to look back to the infancy of the universe.

South Africa and Australia are the two finalists in the competition to host the project, which will eventually link thousands of radio dishes to make a massive antenna with a total surface area of one square kilometre (250 acres).

The telescope, the brainchild of an international consortium of scientists, will be 50 to 100 times more sensitive than today's best radio telescopes and is projected to cost in the neighbourhood of US$2 billion (around $2.59 billion).

Like an archaeologist digging into ever deeper layers of soil, the telescope will pick up radio waves from deeper in space than ever before, ones whose sources are billions of years old and may not even exist anymore.

Scientists say that power will help them look back in time and see how the universe took shape after the big bang.

For African astronomers, next year will be decisive.

Scientists will decide by early March whether the South African and Australian SKA site proposals pass muster. The consortium will then choose the winner, a decision the South Africans say will be political and economic as well as scientific.

South Africa also plans to start construction next year on a 64-antenna radio telescope called MeerKAT that would be one of the five most accurate in the world.

Observation slots at the MeerKAT are already fully booked for its first five years.

A prototype, the KAT-7, is up and running in the Karoo, an arid expanse of sparsely inhabited land stretched across the country's western side.

The government has declared the site, a silent, rocky landscape that looks like a Western movie cast with a few sheep, a "Radio Astronomy Reserve".

The site, which had no trace of human settlement eight years ago, is an hour by road from the nearest town, itself an hour's flight from Cape Town. Like giant white saucers turned to the sky, seven dish antennas capture the noise of the universe with a small, refrigerator-like hum.

"It is a very difficult place to do farming," said Justin Jonas, an astronomer and engineer and the operating director for SKA Africa.

"Which is good for us. It means the fewest people, fewest cell phones and fewest interferences."

South Africa's SKA bid would also put the core of antennas in the Karoo.

Other antennas would be scattered around the continent in Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia and Zambia.

Design and pre-construction on the SKA are scheduled to begin in 2013. The project is expected to be finished around 2024.

It is not an ideal time to be raising money for massive science projects. The US pulled out of the SKA last year, leaving it to Australia, Britain, China, Canada, Italy,New Zealand, the Netherlandsand South Africa to fund. Indiais still on the fence.

But South Africa is undeterred. It says it can build the SKA for less money than Australia, which would co-host with New Zealand.

The government has already invested 635 million rand (around US$75 million) in seven years to build MeerKAT and plans to spend another 500 million rand a year to 2016.

"With a project like this, you don't make money, but you get a lot more. You develop scientific capacity," said Nadeem Oozeer, 36, a researcher from Mauritius.

"In Mauritius, we've got five graduates with terminal (doctorate) degrees. Why not an African Nobel prize winner?"

But officials here say they have to overcome negative perceptions of Africa's scientific potential.

"Afro-pessimism is real," said Derek Hanekom, deputy science minister. "We believe we are the most suitable country to host successfully the SKA, we compete with the best in the world. But we are proceeding anyway and great astronomy is going to be done with or without the SKA."

PFT: Adrian Peterson suffers torn ACL and MCL

San Diego Chargers v Detroit LionsGetty Images

Well, that was some Christmas Eve of football.

The Lions are headed to the playoffs. Tebowmania imploded. The Giants beat the Jets, which made Rex Ryan very unhappy and set up a Giants-Cowboys rematch?next Sunday night for the NFC East title.

So after all the fun, where do the playoff races stand? Let?s take a look.

Four spots remain.

The last wild card spot in both conferences remain up for grabs. So do the NFC East and AFC West division titles. One more spot could be decided Sunday night.

This Sunday night still matters.

With a late field goal, the 49ers narrowly?won in Seattle 19-17?to keep their hopes alive for the No. 1 seed in the NFC. That means Green Bay still has to go all out to beat Chicago on Christmas in order to clinch the top spot in the NFC.

San Francisco can clinch a playoff bye if they beat the Rams next week. (They can also get the bye if New Orleans loses one of their remaining two games. The Saints host the Falcons Monday night.)

A Packers win Sunday night would also clinch the final NFC wild card spot for the Falcons.

Only one NFC East team will make it in.

The Eagles are out. The winner of Cowboys-Giants gets a division title and a home playoff game. The loser is out of the playoffs. Simple.

Patriots clinch bye, have inside track for No. 1 seed.

New England?s 17-point comeback win over Miami puts them in good shape to have homefield advantage. The Patriots clinched a bye on Saturday, and they will get the No. 1 seed in the AFC with a home win over Buffalo next week.

The Ravens and Steelers still have a shot at the No. 1 seed. The winner of the AFC North will earn a bye. Speaking of which . . .

Ravens and the Bengals play the biggest AFC game next week.

If Baltimore wins in Cincinnati, the Ravens get a bye. If the Bengals win, they clinch the No. 6 seed in the AFC playoffs.

The Steelers will be rooting for Cincinnati to sneak in. Pittsburgh can still win the division and get a bye if they beat the Browns and the Ravens lose. The Steelers still have an outside shot for the No. 1 seed if they won and both the Ravens and Patriots lose.

All the AFC North games will be at 4:15 p.m. ET. If the Bengals lose, things get complicated. The Titans, Jets, and Raiders are also alive for the last wild card spot if Cincinnati falls. Oakland could also win the AFC West.

The Bengals could even lose and make the playoffs if they end up in a two-way tie with the Titans at 9-7.

The Jets need a miracle.

Rex Ryan?s crew doesn?t look like a team good enough to win in Miami next week. Even if the Jets win, they need a ton of help to get into the playoffs.

Here?s what needs to happen for the Jets to make it: They need to win and they need a Bengals loss, a Titans loss, and a Raiders or Broncos loss.

The Titans also need a complicated combination of events to make it. Their scenarios are listed right here.

Texans are the No. 3 seed in the AFC.

This much we know for sure. They will avoid the Ravens or Steelers in the first round.

It?s down to the Raiders and Broncos in the AFC West.

The Chiefs and Chargers are out after Saturday?s results. The Raiders and Broncos are both 8-7. The Broncos still hold the tiebreaker advantage over Oakland, so the Broncos still control their fate. They are in with a win next week against Kyle Orton and the Chiefs. How great a matchup is that?

The Raiders can win the division if they beat San Diego in Oakland and Denver loses to the Chiefs. ?Oakland also has a shot for the final wild card spot. It?s possible Oakland could win and still miss the playoffs.

To get the wild card, the Raiders would need a win, a Bengals loss, and a Titans loss. Or a win, a Bengals loss, and a Jets win.

Got all that?

Merry Christmas anyway.
