U.S. sends aircraft carrier back to Gulf to face Iran, Syria

DUBAI (Reuters) - The U.S. Navy is cutting short home leave for the crew of one of its aircraft carriers and sending them back to the Middle East next week to counter any threat from Iran, according to the official Navy News Service.

Defence Secretary Leon Panetta told sailors aboard the USS Stennis in their home port of Seattle on Wednesday they were needed back in the Middle East soon, after approving calls from the U.S. Central Command for Stennis to return to the region.

"Obviously, Iran is one of those threats," the U.S. military news service quoted Panetta as saying during a send-off event at a military base on the U.S. West Coast.

"Secondly, it is the turmoil in Syria," he said. "We're obviously following that closely as well."

The Stennis' departure in January from the Bahrain-based U.S. Fifth Fleet area of operations prompted Iranian army chief Ataollah Salehi to threaten action if it returned, saying Iran was "not in the habit of warning more than once".

The threats started a war of words between Iran and the United States that spooked oil markets, and fears over possible military confrontation remain high.

Panetta cited Iran's nuclear program and its threats to oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz as two concerns the Stennis strike group could counter in the U.S. Central Command's area of responsibility, which also includes Syria and Afghanistan.

U.S. attention on Syria is focused on providing humanitarian aid, monitoring chemical and biological weapon stockpiles, and offering non-lethal assistance to forces opposing President Bashar al-Assad, he said.

A spokesman for the Fifth Fleet in Bahrain said the redeployment was not a build-up in the Gulf because the USS Enterprise is due to leave the region on its final voyage back to the United States before being decommissioned after over 50 years of service.

"The presence of two aircraft carriers changes based on needs and requirements," Lieutenant Greg Raelson said.

Iranian threats to block the waterway through which about 17 million barrels a day sailed in 2011 have grown in the past year as U.S. and European sanctions aimed at starving Tehran of funds for its nuclear program have tightened.

A heavy western naval presence in the Gulf is a big deterrent to Tehran actually trying to block the shipping route through which most of the crude exported from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Iraq sails.

The Stennis had been due to deploy next to the Pacific towards the end of 2012 but its return to active duty has been brought forward by four months because of tension in the Gulf.

First lady to see Sikh shooting victims' families

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? First lady Michelle Obama is scheduled to meet with relatives of those killed and injured in a Sikh (seek) temple shooting in suburban Milwaukee earlier this month.

Sikh leaders say they're grateful for the visit, set for Thursday afternoon. They also say they've taken comfort in the knowledge that the shooting has at least helped them educate the world about their religion.

Amardeep Kaleka is the son of the temple president, one of six people killed. Kaleka says his father is educating more people about Sikhism in death than he could in life.

Inderjeet Singh Dhillon is one of the temple leaders. He says Sikhs pray for God to give peace to everyone, regardless of religion. He says recent media attention has helped Sikhs spread that message of peace.

Mila Kunis signs on for Paul Haggis' "Third Person"

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Mila Kunis is joining the cast of the Oscar-winning director-writer Paul Haggis's drama "Third Person," with James Franco and Casey Affleck in negotiations to join the film.

"Third Person," which has a budget of $28 million, is heading for a mid-October start date and is being produced and financed by Corsan Films.

Set in Rome, New York and Paris, where the film will shoot, "Third Person" features three interlocking love stories.

Previously announced cast members include Liam Neeson, who plays a journalist, and Olivia Wilde, who plays a New York gossip columnist.

Corsan founder Paul Breuls is producing with Haggis and his producing partner, Michael Nozik. Haggis will direct from his own script. CAA is co-representing domestic rights with Paradigm. Corsan is handling international rights.

Breuls and his president of sales, Pascal Borno, have brought a number of high-profile films to the marketplace recently and are heading to the Toronto International Film Festival next month with a strong slate.

Recent announcements include "Killing Season" from director Mark Steven Johnson, with Robert De Niro and John Travolta; "Emperor," an epic adventure from Lee Tamahori, which Corsan is financing and producing; Roland Joffe's time travel film "Singularity," which stars Josh Hartnett; and the Chet Baker biopic "The Prince of Cool" which Breuls is set to direct.

Breuls founded Corsan as a film production and financing company in 1989 in Antwerp, the Belgian city known for producing some of the country's more outlandish fashion designers, including Martin Margiela and Bernhard Wilhelm.

In 2003, he created the Corsan Tax Fund, which finances all of the company's films, and added Corsan World Sales in 2008. Haggis and Nozik's production company Hwy 61 recently announced it was moving forward on a number of other projects, including a father-son apartheid project to be produced with Olympus Pictures, and written and directed by Mukunda Michael Dewil.

Kunis is repped by CAA.

Microsoft technology release date shows they hate freshmen | Rocky ...

New semester, new classes, new computer. But with all of the different choices out there, how can you make sure that what you are sacrificing 9 months of eating to buy is what you really want? Too often we purchase something only to later regret that painful separation of money from our wallet.

We bought that iPad and then sighed heavily as someone walked by with the Asus Transformer Prime tablet. We looked at our iPad2, trying to love it as much as we would have loved eating cheeseburgers for the next year instead of ramen?or maybe that?s just me.

But with the new wave of technology coming soon, I will take it upon myself, completely unasked?and maybe unwanted?to regurgitate my opinion and force you to read it in the hopes that I can help someone, somewhere out there, to better understand the technological frontier we are currently perched on.

I know you join me in your excitement for Windows 8. Not for the software exactly, but for the flood of new hardware that is slated to arrive with it. And since you are like me, playing with all the touch screen computers and tablets, pretending to be flying a spaceship or hacking into a super secure bank vault or something, your dreams are about to come true.

Microsoft?s new Windows 8 and the metro-style option designed for touch screens is coming soon. It still has the standard look as an option similar to Windows 7, which if you actually use you just wasted a ton of money because you probably should have stuck with Windows 7.

Windows 8 will bring on a wave of fun technology based in touch screens that we can play with and pretend we are cool. I plan to sit in the cardboard spaceship I have with a new touch screen and explore the galaxy.

This is an exciting time, but only so long as you aren?t a freshmen. I?ll explain.

If you haven?t heard, the Windows 8 release date is Oct. 26. That is just long enough after school starts where the lack of a computer would hurt you, but not nearly long enough after you got that old laptop to get a new, cooler one. So get ready for buyers regret, freshmen.

True, there are some good computers out there now. There are good tablets too. But those tablets won?t come close to the Microsoft Surface, the first mainstream piece of tech with software and hardware under one roof.

Yes the first, which some apple fan boys will undoubtedly point out, is false. To whom I will say, you are false. So there. ?Also, Apple computers are stupid. Because I said so, that?s why. And yes, I do have an iPad2, that?s why I can justly say how stupid Apple is.

There is the possibility of Windows 8 being another Windows Vista, meaning that it will be a bigger disappointment than finding out you are not actually adopted. I don?t think that will happen though.

After announcing the Surface, a major surprise to partner companies like HP and Dell, they need to provide a solid piece of software that will lend itself to selling HP, Dell, etc computers.
To compare it to something popular nowadays, it?s like a dance competition. Your friend Winny wrote this great song for you to dance to, like in those Step-Up movie competitions. Only once at the competition, you find out that Winny made his own dance to the same song and is competing against you, too.

The end result? Winny is a jerk-face unless that song he gave you is amazing.

With that explained, at least freshmen know that it isn?t just them that Microsoft hates. They are pretty rude to their friend companies too.

But being a judge at that dance off is still exciting. Unless you are a freshmen, I guess.
Asus Taichi, which is a tablet and ultrabook, due to the dual screens, is gorgeous. As is Asus Zenbook Prime, and if you couldn?t tell, Asus is awesome.

Acer, Lenovo, Samsung, HP, and every other company not wanting to go out of business, is pumping out ideas to match Windows 8. It?s just really unfortunate that freshmen won?t be able to fully take advantage of this new wave of technology.

And Mac-fan-boys. But they are a lost cause anyway.

Then again, most freshmen haven?t dealt with a computer blue screen the night before a big paper or project was due, or third degree burns on your legs from your laptop, whose fans broke a couple months back and now has to be packed with ice to prevent it from self-destructing. So maybe it is fair.
