(AP) ? When the Democratic Party's national convention opens this week, President Barack Obama's target audience won't be in the crowd. It will be the small sliver of undecided voters in battleground states who will be critical to the outcome of what the polls show is a tight race with two months to go.

Obama's campaign will turn to technology to get some of those voters engaged in the convention. The campaign will stream the entire event online, incorporate voter comments into the feed, and have convention attendees interact electronically with those watching on the Internet and mobile devices.

It's an attempt to recapture the Obama team's insurgent, grassroots appeal from 2008, when the campaign set new standards for using technology in politics. The high-tech engagement also helps the campaign capture data on voters that can be used for registration drives and get out the vote efforts.

Targeting Hispanics, the convention will be streamed online simultaneously in Spanish. Obama is hoping his sizeable advantage over Republican rival Mitt Romney with Hispanics will help him win key battleground states in the West, as well as Florida and Virginia.

Republicans also streamed much of their convention on YouTube, though the feed was not interactive.

The move to online streaming comes as television networks cut back on their convention coverage. TV viewership was down during last week's Republican convention; about 30 million people watched Romney's acceptance speech, compared to 40 million who saw Sen. John McCain accept the GOP nomination in 2008.

Starting Tuesday, a parade of high-profile speakers will stand on a blue-carpeted stage in Charlotte's Time Warner Cable Arena to vouch for Obama's economic agenda, which his team says is focused on the middle class: ending tax cuts for the rich and reducing the debt, while spending more on education, energy and infrastructure.

Several voters ? called "American Heroes" by Obama's team ? also will speak at and appear in videos at the convention, putting a human face on Obama's program.

The Democratic National Convention starts less than a week after Republicans gathered in Tampa, Fla., to nominate Romney as the party's presidential candidate. Democrats hope that by holding their convention second, Obama can emerge with momentum on his side as the race for the White House bounds into its final stretch.

Obama will largely be responsible for generating that momentum. He will close the convention Thursday night with a speech in an outdoor football stadium, just as he did in 2008. Mindful of the comparisons to four years ago, Obama's campaign is scrambling to ensure that the 74,000-seat stadium is filled to capacity. The largest crowd Obama has drawn during the 2012 campaign is about 14,000 people, far less than the jaw-dropping crowds he attracted in the 2008 campaign.

Aides say Obama won't ignore the economic woes that have defined his four years in the White House. But they say he plans to focus largely on the future, and why he believes his policies will succeed in a second term.

Obama isn't expected to outline any new policy proposals. Instead, he plans to make the case for continuing what he has started. And he is expected to double down on agenda items, such as immigration and tax reforms, that gained little traction during his four years in office.

"When the convention is over, folks with be left with a clear road map of where he thinks America needs to go," said Stephanie Cutter, Obama's deputy campaign manager. "And it will be clear what his focus will be in an Obama second term."

Working against Obama: the nation's 8.3 percent unemployment rate, sluggish economic growth and fears the economy could slip back into a recession.

There's also a general malaise. An Associated Press-GfK poll conducted earlier this month showed 60 percent of registered voters say the country is heading in the wrong direction, while just 35 percent say it is heading in the right direction.

The convention opens Tuesday with first lady Michelle Obama, whose popularity far surpasses her husband's, as a featured speaker. San Antonio, Texas, Mayor Julian Castro also is slated for that night. He will be the first Hispanic to deliver the Democratic convention's keynote address. Their roles on the convention's opening night are part of Democrats' efforts to shore up support among women and Hispanics, two crucial voting blocs where Obama holds an advantage over Romney.

Mrs. Obama is expected to make the case that Obama is the best candidate to advocate on behalf of the middle class because he has experienced their struggles himself.

Many voters already have heard Mrs. Obama's stories about her husband being raised by a single mother and his grandparents or having struggled to pay off student loans.

But she is emphasizing them again in this campaign in hopes of drawing a contrast with Romney's privileged upbringing.

Polls show voters think Obama understands the economic issues that are important to them better than Romney, even though the Republican has an edge on who voters believe is better suited to manage the economy.

Former President Bill Clinton, who is emerging as one of the campaign's most effective surrogates, will headline the convention Wednesday and formally nominate Obama. He hopes to remind voters of the flush economy he presided over and make the case that Obama's policies will lead to similar results.

Vice President Joe Biden and Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry will address the large stadium crowd Thursday night before Obama speaks.

Kerry, seen as a potential second-term secretary of state under Obama, will try to capitalize on the Democratic Party's rare advantage on national security issues. He is expected to trumpet Obama's decision to order the raid that killed Osama bin Laden and the president's plan to end the Afghanistan war, a sharp contrast to Republicans who rarely mentioned the war during their convention or the tens of thousands of troops still engaged in combat.

Obama's young daughters start school in Washington next week and are not expected to have a formal role at the gathering. But they could come to Charlotte Thursday night for their father's acceptance speech.

Iran to hold major air defense drill: commander

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran will hold a large-scale military drill involving all its air defense systems next month, an Iranian commander was quoted as saying on Saturday, one of a number of military simulations it has carried out this year.

The air defense drill will include fighter jets and simulate emergency situations, said Farzad Esmaili, commander of the Iranian army's air defense force, according to Iran's English-language Press TV.

The drill will include both the army and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Esmaili said, and follows a series of large-scale military simulations such as the "Great Prophet 7" missile exercises in July.

Israeli leaders' warnings that time is running out to halt Iran's controversial nuclear program have raised concern they may order an attack on Iranian nuclear sites, though Israel has come under growing international pressure not to act alone.

Israel and major Western powers suspect Iran is secretly trying to acquire the ability to produce nuclear bombs, but Tehran says its program is for purely peaceful purposes.

"Today our systems are prepared in a serious way for modern air threats, such that the performance of the systems compared to the previous profile has improved," Esmaili was quoted as saying on Friday by the Iranian newspaper Hamshahri.

"The army air defense command's mission, with the development of the national defense mission and coordination between the armed forces, is to undertake appropriate operations against the threats of the enemies," he said, without mentioning any country by name.

Iran announced last month that it had tested a short-range missile with a new guidance system capable of striking land and sea targets.

Finding Help From A Social Media Agency: Enterprises Build An ...

While major movers in the advertising scene may assume that more actual or ?organic? ways of marketing products and services like giving away pamphlets, setting up billboards, as well as holding special events continue to lure customers and prospects, there?s no question that cyberspace is a vital venue to get the word out about a company that must be seriously invested in. There?s hardly an individual to be found who has yet to own a single cell phone or set up an account for a social networking site for the first time these days; for the average adult, logging onto the Internet using a cell phone, laptop computer, or tablet computer is actually a regular activity (typically repeated many times a day), making the World Wide Web a very good place for enterprises to reach present customers and connect with potential new ones.

Where exactly, will these target people be found? The answer would undeniably be in social media sites. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, FourSquare, LinkedIn, Google Plus, Flickr, and WordPress blogging sites are some of the sites that millions of users check on everyday, and it is only rational for businesses of all sizes and across various sectors to reach out to their expected audiences in those websites. With thousands (or even millions) of Internet surfers logged onto a particular site at any moment, there are plenty of good possibilities to make use of popular and word-of-mouth marketing and advertising through the buyers -that?s for sure free positive promotion at no extra cost to the company owner. Social media sites enable companies to have real-time feedback on their performance and their offerings.

Because any regular Internet user would know, most of the sites motivate customers to leave remarks, share information, and express their thoughts wherever possible; there?s no better or maybe less complicated way for companies to see both positive and negative messages from their consumers and change their services as necessary to meet the needs and desires of their market.

Because of an expert social media agency, businesses can build a good social media presence while keeping their customers up-to-date with new improvements and special deals, keeping them lured to remain connected and maintain an on-line connection. Blinded sailor swims to gold in first Paralympic race

By Bill Briggs, NBC News contributor

Less than a year after losing his eyes in a battlefield explosion, Navy Lt. Brad Snyder?on Friday?felt the wall, heard the cheers and tasted gold, beating the world?s best blind swimmers in the 100-meter freestyle final at the London Paralympics.

In a race only the Aquatics Centre spectators (and none of the eight competitors) could see, Snyder, a former Naval Academy swimmer and an ex-Navy bomb defuser, posted a winning time of 57.43 seconds. He finished more than one second faster than China?s Bozun Yang, who took silver.

?It was my first final, it was my first medal," Snyder said after the race. "It?s an immense amount of relief. There was a lot of uncertainty this morning as to whether I?d be fast or not, a lot of uncertainty whether I?d be able to come in front of this crowd and keep my wits about me and keep a good race plan. We succeeded on both counts today, came out of the gates with a gold medal and now I?m looking forward to maintaining that as much as possible throughout the week."

Earlier in the day, during his qualifying heat for the 100-meter free, Snyder set a new Paralympic record of 57.18 seconds ? more than a half second faster than his previous personal best (which already was the No. 1-ranked time in the world.)

?I have six more events, some better than others, but I?m prepared by good nutrition and good rest.," he said. "As soon as we?re done here we?ll head back, grab some dinner, go to sleep and kinda just get into this rhythm of competition ? swimming each morning, swimming each evening???and see if we can keep that performance at a high level.?

Before today?s races, Snyder said his busy London swim schedule shapes up perfectly for potential success.

?I?m actually really excited to have one of the preferred events up first, so I have something I?m targeting and feeling good about and looking forward to,? said Snyder, who lives in Baltimore. ?Hopefully, I'll get the butterflies out in prelims and then be ready to rock at night.?

Lt. Brad Snyder lost his sight in an IED explosion in Afghanistan last year. The Navy officer will once again represent the U.S., this time at the London 2012 Paralympics in September.

During a patrol last Sept. 7 in Afghanistan, Snyder was rushing forward to help two Afghan soldiers wounded in an initial IED blast. While sprinting, Snyder tripped a second hidden bomb in a farm-field irrigation ditch. His eyes were irreparably damaged by the detonation and later were removed by a surgeon.

Entering the London Paralympics, Snyder trained for months with his coach, Brian Loeffler, to shave split seconds off the world No. 1 times he already had set this year in three freestyle events ? the 50 meters, 100 meters and 400 meters.

But trying to cut through the water more quickly caused Snyder to crash hard into the lane lines during some of those practice sessions.

Lt. Brad Snyder, blinded by an IED explosion in Afghanistan, trained hard for the London 2012 Paralympics.

?I started wearing compression sleeves in practice because I started beating my arms up pretty bad,? Snyder said before Friday?s race.

?We?ve put a lot of emphasis on quality. I?ve put a lot of work into just being as symmetrical as possible and really working on a quality stroke and trying to find ways to maintain good technique ... That way we can avoid crashing and losing speed due to fatigue.

?I?ve been doing a lot of kick and strength work to hopefully be able to control the speed of the sprint with my legs as opposed to trying to do it with my arms which I think lends to me crashing.?

Centra "Ce-Ce" Mazyck, who was paralyzed during a parachute jump with the 82 Airborne in November 2003, will compete in the javelin at the London Paralympics. "This is my second chance," she tells NBC News' Jamieson Lesko.

Like all blind Paralympic swimmers, Snyder competes while wearing blacked-out goggles ??a Paralympic rule to ensure no athlete in the field can see even a glimmer of light. He also relies on Loeffler, the swimming coach at Loyola University, to stand at the end of his lanes and tap him on the shoulders with a walking cane to alert him that a flip turn or finishing kick is needed.

The 100-meter free was the first of seven events Snyder will swim in London. Depending how well Snyder performs in his preliminary heats, he could race 14 times in nine days.

?It?s spread across so many days. And there?s one event per day. And my coach and I have strategy on that: it behooves me to use the opportunities to race just to get accustomed to the pool, the setup, the sound of the start, and walking around," Snyder said. ?If I can make finals in an off event then it gives me the opportunity to go through the ready-room system.

?It actually works out great to just kind of make the extraordinary ordinary. Just get accustomed to being in front of the people, hearing the noise, hopping in the pool and racing.??

Some of the hottest tickets at the London Paralympics are for wheelchair rugby. The sport is so violent and fierce, that it has been dubbed "Murderball". ITN's Lewis Vaughan Jones met Team Great Britain's inspirational captain.
