President Obama sees popularity boost in Israel (The Christian Science Monitor)

Washington ? If President Obama is looking for some relief from mediocre favorability numbers, he could take solace in a place where he might not have expected to find it ? Israel.

In a new poll of Jewish and Arab Israelis, Mr. Obama earns a favorable rating of 54 percent from Israeli Jews ? up an impressive 13 percent compared to last year.

By contrast, Obama?s job approval rating at home is stuck in the low 40?s, according to Real Clear Politics, while just over half of Americans disapprove of the job the president is doing.

The jump in Obama?s favorability among Jewish Israelis might seem counterintuitive.

Obama has never wowed Israelis like he did Europeans ? in fact while the new US president was riding high in much of the world after his election, only 7 percent of Israelis had a favorable view of him,

More recently, Obama hasn?t exactly been bosom buddies with the Israeli leader, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and he specifically called on Israel this year to accept a Palestinian state based largely on pre-1967 borders, an idea that about a third of Israelis reject, according to the poll.

Moreover, Obama has not visited Israel in his three years as president ? although he did take in neighboring Egypt in 2009 to deliver his famous Cairo speech.

The Monitor's Weekly News Quiz for Nov. 27-Dec. 2, 2011

But there are also some key reasons Israeli Jews warmed up to Obama this year, some Israel analysts say.

?It?s pretty simple, really,? says Sam Lewis, a former US ambassador to Israel. ?In the first place Obama is spending a lot of time strengthening security arrangements with Israel, and the Israelis know that,? he says. ?And then he defended them in the UN and he vetoed our own position on the Palestinians? when the president rejected before the UN General Assembly in September the Palestinians? plan for declaring statehood.

Still, Ambassador Lewis adds, ?It?s still surprising he?s come back [in favorability among Israeli Jews] as fast and as high as he has.?

The poll, an annual survey conducted by Shibley Telhami of the University of Maryland and the Brookings Institution???s Saban Center for Middle East Policy, also found Israelis to be wary of where they see the Arab Spring taking the region they live in.

A plurality of 44 percent of Israeli Jews said the Arab Spring would be positive for Israel if it leads to more democracy in Arab countries. But a majority, 51 percent, says that in reality the Arab Spring has been mostly negative for Israel, with only 15 percent saying the impact has been mostly positive.

The news out of Israel is not all rosy for Obama. The poll also finds that Israeli Jews cite Angela Merkel, Bill Clinton, and even George W. Bush as world leaders they admire before they pick Obama (To be fair, no world leader commands the admiration of even a large minority of Israeli Jews, with Chancellor Merkel mentioned by 12 percent, President Clinton by 10 percent, and President Bush by 7 percent, just ahead of Obama?s 6 percent).

Israelis are still smarting over Obama???s decision to give a major speech in Cairo, and failing to stop in to see them while he was in the neighborhood.

?Obama made a big mistake early on by not going to Israel and explaining his policies to them,? Lewis says. ?He was seen as choosing the Arab side.?

Obama may be recovering from that perception now, but Lewis says it?s unlikely the president will ever match Bill Clinton?s stature in Israel.

?Clinton made a great effort to connect to the Israeli public and the press, and he?s remained popular ever since,? he says. ?Obama has never shown that ability to ?feel their pain,? and that has registered. He?s just too cerebral for them.?

LG Nitro HD hands-on (update: video)

AT&T stole some of LG's thunder earlier this week when it unveiled the company's LTE flagship -- the Nitro HD -- before the handset's official coming out soirée. Well, tonight LG's gone and thrown that fete anyway, introducing us (once again) to its 4.5-incher. But you have to wonder why the company's even bothering to roll out yet another Gingerbread-baked device when Samsung's Galaxy Nexus is already out of the gate and leading the Android charge with ICS -- not to mention the current availability of rival heavyweights like the Rezound and Droid RAZR. Still, the phone's packing some very respectable specs, with a "true" HD 1280 x 720 IPS display, dual 1.3 / 8 megapixel shooters, a hefty 20GB of storage and a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm APQ8060 processor running the show. Is it too late in the game for LG to make its beast matter? Follow past the break as we gather our first impressions of this tardy to the party entry.

Nicolas Cage's 'Superman' Comic Sells for $2.1 Million

Actor's pristine copy of 'Superman' debut sets record for comic book sale.

It's a good thing Nicolas Cage was able to get his rare copy of "Action Comics" No. 1 back in April after it was stolen from his house in 2000. Because in an online auction on Wednesday, the most sought-after comic in history sold for a record $2.1 million, after 50 people bid on the June 1938 book in which Superman makes his debut.

Cage's copy (though the identity of the owner has not been disclosed, many believe it still belongs to the actor), one of only 100 believed to remain in existence, was graded at 9.0 before the auction, making it the best condition of an Action #1 that has ever been graded by the leading comic book grading company, Certified Guaranty Company. Shattering the previous $1.5 million record for a less-well preserved copy of "Action Comics" No.1 sold last March, Cage's comic became the most expensive to ever sell at auction
, when it went for $2,161,000.

And it almost didn't happen. Cage's comic was stolen from his house in 2000 and then recovered by Los Angeles police when an unidentified man bought the contents of an abandoned storage locker in the San Fernando Valley. Cage reported it stolen on January 21, 2000, after noticing that it, along with two other rare comics, had been stolen from security frames mounted on the wall of his Los Angeles home.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, experts believe that only five other No. 1's with quality near Cage's exist and all are in private hands. Cage bought his copy at auction in 1997 for around $150,000.

Newt's 2006 paper: 'Zero tolerance for amnesty' (Politico)

I've been going over Newt Gingrich's public stands on immigration in recent years, in the wake of the CNN debate in which he said he was willing to take hits for advocating a more "humane" approach, I read his AEI paper from 2006 on immigration, in which he took a "zero tolerance" policy toward amnesty.

The entire paper is 25 pages long, and goes over several issues in the battle against illegal immigration?? border security chief among them.

But there is a lengthy passage against amnesty, which begins this way:

Zero Tolerance for Amnesty. As Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger put it so eloquently in a Los Angeles Times op-ed on March 28, ?We can embrace the immigrant without endorsing illegal immigration. Granting citizenship to people who are here illegally is not just amnesty ... it's anarchy. We are a country of immigrants, yes. But we are also a nation of laws. People who want to be citizens will want to do it the right way.?

And doing it the right way means that all those who are currently working in the United States illegally and who wish to apply for the worker visa program must return to their home country and apply. Application for the worker visa program should not be permitted in the United States under any circumstances.

Anything less than requiring people who are working here illegally to return home to apply for a worker visa is amnesty.

This is a bit different than the position he took in the CNN debate, where he suggested that ripping apart families and sending people who've been active in the community for a long time back to their native countries was not the proper approach.

Man faces charges in military buildings shootings (AP)

ALEXANDRIA, Va. ? The lawyer for an ex-Marine Corps reservist accused of firing shots at the Pentagon and other military targets last year says his client is a loyal American and that a notebook found in his possession containing references to Osama bin Laden and jihad was merely part of his efforts to understand the enemy.

Yonathan Melaku, 23, of Alexandria, Va., made an initial appearance Wednesday in U.S. District Court to answer charges that while a reservist he conducted a series of overnight shootings in October and November 2010 at the Pentagon, Marine Corps Museum in Quantico, and other targets including a Marine recruiting station in Chantilly. Nobody was injured.

He was arrested and charged in June after he was spotted in Arlington National Cemetery after dark in an incident that sparked a massive security scare in and around the Pentagon, which is near the cemetery. A court affidavit says he was carrying a backpack with ammonium nitrate, which can be used in explosives, and a notebook containing references in Arabic to Osama bin Laden, al-Qaida and "the path to jihad," which included a reference to "defeat coalition and allies and America."

But the federal charges ? two counts of damaging federal property plus two counts of using a firearm in a crime of violence ? were on hold while he awaited trial in Loudoun County on unrelated larceny charges. These charges led to his dismissal from the Marine reserves a few days after his arrest for allegedly firing the shots at military buildings.

Earlier this month, Melaku, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Ethiopia, struck a plea deal on the state charges that resulted in a six-month jail term, including time served. When his jail term concluded Wednesday, he was picked up by U.S. Marshals and transferred to Alexandria to face the federal charges.

In a phone interview following Wednesday's hearing, Melaku's attorney, Gregory English, said his client volunteered to join the Marines and served honorably while enlisted.

As for the notebook references to bin Laden and al-Qaida, English said it's a mistake to assume they denote a nefarious intent.

"We're at war with al-Qaida," English said. "The first thing they teach you as a soldier is `Know thy enemy.'"

At Wednesday's hearing, a magistrate ordered that Melaku remain in custody pending a detention hearing scheduled for Thursday.

Prosecutor Neil Hammerstrom told the judge that the government will seek to keep Melaku in jail pending trial and may present evidence at Thursday's hearing that includes a videotape that Melaku purportedly made while firing shots at the Marine Corps museum. A court affidavit quotes Melaku on the tape saying, "That's what they get. That's my target. That's the military building. It's going to be attacked."

If convicted on all four counts, Melaku would face a mandatory minimum of 35 years in prison and a possible life sentence.

Lava fingerprinting reveals differences between Hawaii's twin volcanoes

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2011) ? Hawaii's main volcano chains--the Loa and Kea trends--have distinct sources of magma and unique plumbing systems connecting them to Earth's deep mantle, according to UBC research recently published in Nature Geoscience, in conjunction with researchers at the universities of Hawaii and Massachusetts.

This study is the first to conclusively relate geochemical differences in surface lava rocks from both chains to differences in their deep mantle sources, 2,800 kilometres below Earth's surface, at the core-mantle boundary.

"We now know that by studying oceanic island lavas we can approach the composition of Earth's mantle, which represents 80 per cent of the Earth's volume and is obviously not directly accessible," says Dominique Weis, Canada Research Chair in the Geochemistry of the Earth's Mantle and Director of UBC's Pacific Centre for Isotopic and Geochemical Research.

"It also implies that mantle plumes indeed bring material from the deep mantle to the surface and are a crucial means of heat and material transport to the surface."

The results of this study also suggest that a recent dramatic increase in Hawaiian volcanism, as expressed by the existence of the Hawaiian islands and the giant Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea volcanoes (which are higher than Mount Everest when measured from their underwater base) is related to a shift in the composition and structure of the source region of the Hawaiian mantle plume. Thus, this work shows, for the first time, that the chemistry of hotspot lavas is a novel and elegant probe of deep earth evolution.

Weis and UBC colleagues Mark Jellinek and James Scoates made the connection by fingerprinting samples of Hawaiian island lavas--generated over the course of five million years--by isotopic analyses. The research included collecting 120 new samples from Mauna Loa--"the largest volcano on Earth" emphasizes co-author and University of Massachusetts professor Michael Rhodes.

"Hawaiian volcanoes are the best studied in the world and yet we are continuing to make fundamental discoveries about how they work," according to co-author and University of Hawaii volcanologist Michael Garcia.

The next steps for the researchers will be to study the entire length of the Hawaiian chain (which provides lava samples ranging in age from five to 42 million years old) as well as other key oceanic islands to assess if the two trends can be traced further back in time and to strengthen the relationship between lavas and the composition of the deep mantle.
