Amanda Bynes heads for home after her May 23 arrest.

Amanda Bynes has taken to Twitter to claim she was "sexually harassed" during her arrest Thursday night in New York.

"I was sexually harassed by one of the cops the night before last which is who then arrested me," she wrote. "He lied and said I threw a bong out the window when I opened the window for fresh air. Hilarious. He slapped my vagina. Sexual harassment. Big deal."

Bynes said she reported the officer, writing, "I then called the cops on him. He handcuffed me, which I resisted, quite unlike any of the reports stated. Then I was sent to a mental hospital. Offensive."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a New York Police Department spokesperson says Bynes' claim is being investigated by its Internal Affairs Bureau.

Bynes was arrested Thursday night after police were called to her apartment building reportedly because she was smoking marijuana in the lobby. While they were in Bynes' apartment, she reportedly threw a bong out her 36th floor window. The bong was never recovered.

Bynes spent the night in jail and was released without bail being set Friday morning.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama visited tornado-devastated Moore, Okla., Sunday, consoling people staggered by the loss of life and property and promising that the government will be behind them "every step of the way."

"I'm just a messenger here," the president said, saying "folks are behind you" across America. He offered moral and monetary support in the wake of the monstrous EF5 tornado that killed 24 people, including 10 children, last Monday afternoon.

Standing with Gov. Mary Fallin and other state and federal officials, Obama noted a substantial rebuilding job ahead and said that "our hearts go out to you."

"This is a strong community with strong character. There's no doubt they will bounce back," he said. "But they need help."

The White House said the Federal Emergency Management Agency has already provided $57 million in rebates and incentives to help build about 12,000 storm shelters in Oklahoma. "These storm shelters can be the difference between life and death," presidential spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters accompanying Obama to Oklahoma on Air Force One.

For Obama, Sunday's visit had an all-too-familiar ring.

Only five months into his second term, he has traveled to the northeast to console people in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing, and visited Connecticut and Arizona to comfort people traumatized by shooting rampages. He also has undertaken his consoler-in-chief role at the site of plant explosions and mine disasters, not to mention a series of natural disasters including Joplin, Mo., and the Jersey Shore, which was heavily damaged by Superstorm Sandy last year.

Once on the ground, Obama urged the American people to make contributions, saying the damage was "pretty hard to comprehend."

Shortly after his arrival on a partly cloudy day, Obama rode past grassy fields strewn with scattered debris, witnessing devastation so awesome that it appeared as if garbage had literally rained from the sky. His first stop was the demolished site of the Plaza Towers Elementary School, where seven students were killed when the tornado turned the one-story building into a heap of bricks, broken concrete and twisted metal.

"I know this is tough," he told superintendent Susie Pierce as he gripped her hand. As he walked, the demolished school was on his left and on his right, homes as far as the eye could see were reduced to piles of rubble. Vehicles were turned upside down and toys like a pink doll carriage and children's books were strewn with furniture and ripped out wall insulation. Every tree had been stripped of its leaves and bark.

Obama at one point joined the Lewis family, which lost their home behind the school. He said the important thing was that they survived and could replace their things.

"What a mess," he told their son Zack, a third grader at the shattered school. Zack's father, Scott, ran into the school just before the storm hit and ran with his terrified son back to their home's storm shelter.

"You've got some story to tell," Obama told the boy. "This is something you'll remember all your life."

Obama later met privately with victims' families at Moore Fire Department Station (hash)1, which has turned into a command center with dozens of first responders sitting at folding tables where fire trucks are normally parked. Obama marveled that they saved so many lives "given the devastation."

"I know this is tough," he told superintendent Susie Pierce as he gripped her hand.

As he descended the stairs upon landing at Tinker Air Base near here, Obama was greeted first by Fallin, who had said earlier she appreciated the visit, but that her state also needed quick action from FEMA.

The Republican governor said that so far, the agency has done a great job of speeding relief and cash assistance to affected families, but said she's concerned about the long run.

"There's going to come a time when there's going to be a tremendous amount of need once we begin the debris clearing, which we already have, but really get it cleared off to where we need to start rebuilding these homes, rebuilding these businesses," she said on CBS' "Face the Nation." ''And we know at different times in the past, money hasn't come always as quickly as it should."

Fallin said the money is particularly vital for the victims. "A lot of people lose their checkbooks, they lose their credit cards, they lose their driver's license, their birth certificates, their insurance papers, they lose everything, and they have no cash. And some of the banks were even hit, the ATM machines, so people need cash to get immediate needs," she said on CBS.

Earnest touted the federal contributions so far, including Obama's signing of a disaster declaration within hours of the storm to speed aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Earnest said that 450 FEMA personnel were working on the ground in Oklahoma and have delivered 43,000 meals, 150,000 liters of water and thousands of cots, blankets and tarps. He said 4,200 people have applied for disaster assistance, and $3.4 million in payments have been approved.

Among the tornado victims were 10 children, including two sisters pulled by the strong winds out of their mother's grasp, an infant who died along with his mother trying to ride out the storm in a convenience store and seven students at Plaza Towers. Many students were pulled from the rubble after the school was destroyed.

Obama says nation must do more for fallen heroes

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama says the nation must do more than just remember its fallen heroes on Memorial Day.

In his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama says the country must care for the loved ones the fallen leave behind. He says the country must also make sure that all veterans receive the care and benefits they have earned.

Obama says that, above all, the armed forces must have the support needed to carry out their missions at home and abroad.

In the Republican address, Oklahoma Sen. James Inhofe thanks the nation for its prayers and support following Monday's deadly tornado in his home state. He recalls past natural and man-made disasters in Oklahoma and says that while the state was hard hit, "we're not knocked out."

Zimmerman's lawyers say Trayvon Martin argued with friend, was 'angry' on night of shooting

Pool / Getty Images file

George Zimmerman, defendant in the killing of Trayvon Martin, stands in the Seminole Circuit Court with his attorney Mark O'Mara for a pre-trial hearing on April 30, 2013 in Sanford, Fla.

By James Novogrod and Tom Winter, NBC News

Attorneys for George Zimmerman say that unreleased text messages drawn from Trayvon Martin?s cell phone show the 17-year-old was arguing with a friend and was ?angry? on the day he was shot and killed in Sanford, Fla.

?This is relevant to Mr. Martin?s overall demeanor that day and relevant to his emotional state,? a new court filing by the defense team reads. The filing goes on to say the messages ?may assist the jury in understanding why Trayvon Martin chose to hide and then confront George Zimmerman rather than simply going home.?

The document, filed with the court in Sanford and made public Friday, is the latest in a back-and-forth over the admissibility of character evidence related to Martin, whose death on Feb. 26, 2012 spurred a national conversation about race, guns, and Florida?s expansive self-defense laws.

Zimmerman, 29, is accused of second degree murder in Martin?s death and will face trial June 10. He has plead not guilty, telling police he resorted to self-defense after Martin punched him and beat his head to the ground after the two crossed paths inside a gated community that night.

Prosecutors have asked the court to prohibit text messages and other materials related to Martin?s life, arguing the materials are irrelevant to the circumstances surrounding the teen?s death.

At a key hearing next week, Judge Debra S. Nelson will hear arguments over what evidence should be admissible at trial.

Thursday, Zimmerman?s lawyers released a slew of evidence culled from Martin?s cell phone, including two pictures of a handgun, and text messages that appear to refer to an organized fight and smoking marijuana.

"He got mo hits cause in da 1st round," Martin says in a November 2011 message, apparently referring to a fight. "He had me on da ground nd I couldn?t do ntn."

In the filing made public Friday, Zimmerman's lawyers say the messages show Martin was an experienced fighter, and that marijuana use "can affect one's judgment and demeanor and is known to cause paranoia and aggression in some."

Text messages between Martin and the friend referred to as Witness 8 from the night of the shooting are redacted in the defense's Thursday release.

Legal experts, citing strict standards for evidence under the law, say it?s not likely the materials will be admitted.?

In a release Thursday, a lawyer for Martin?s family, Benjamin Crump, called the release of the materials from Martin?s phone a ?desperate and pathetic attempt by the defense to pollute and sway the jury pool.?

But in an interview, Mark O?Mara, Zimmerman?s lead attorney, said he doesn't presume all of the evidence will be admitted.? Gathering and sharing materials is part of the normal course of discovery in Florida, O?Mara said, where prosecution and defense are required to swap evidence before trial.

"I'm not sure that any of the stuff about Trayvon Martin's background or my client's background will be relevant," O'Mara told NBC News. "If they were to not go into George's background, and not suggest that Trayvon Martin was an angel, we won't go there either.?

In July, the State released an FBI report that included an interview with an ex-fiancee who filed an injunction order against Zimmerman after an altercation.

Prosecutors also released a photocopy of a MySpace page from 2005, on which Zimmerman appears to disparage Mexicans.

Zimmerman?s attorneys say their client, whose mother is Peruvian, harbors no prejudice. The FBI report also concluded there was no evidence Zimmerman ever demonstrated any racial bias.

Also Friday, the court released a second document by the defense, pushing for a hearing to examine State studies of a 911 tape that captured screaming on the night of the shooting. Lawyers for Zimmerman are seeking to prevent voice analysts hired by the prosecution from testifying at trial.

Write for the Future: Multiple Homelands, Or None At All?

2013-05-25-facebook_1789232120.jpg

by Ravi Popat

I have been homeless for almost 18 years. Or maybe, I should call it "homeland-less." I am a citizen of France, was born in England, am living in the USA, and am of Indian origin. And so my opportunity or dilemma starts with my lack of a definitive home country.

I have the opportunity to make my own culture, picking and rejecting elements from the different places of my upbringing. For example, I am an Indian as I declare that my parents will never see the inside of a nursing home. I am English and American, knowing I will never exist in a caste.

I face a dilemma when I allow other forces to dictate the choices for me. I realized this when I met "John." I was 12 years old working at my uncle's convenience store in England. The shop was calm as usual on this Tuesday morning, with a steady trickle of men from the nearby factory coming for newspapers and cigarettes.

"Good morning John, can I get a pack of Marlboro's as well?" asked one of his regular customers.

I looked around the shop, searching for "John." My name is Ravi and I know my Uncle as Ramesh. Who was John? My uncle responded by happily handing his customer the pack of cigarettes. I realized that John was the name that regulars used for my uncle. I was bewildered, yet I still accepted my uncle's Anglicized name. As I grew older, I came across more "Johns."

John was not just a name; it was my uncle's effort to keep his English customers comfortable with him. My first personal "John" moment was in a hostile place: the school bus on the way to Bedford. On the bus we often laughed at the latest episodes of The Simpsons. One conversation veered towards Apu, the show's Indian shopkeeper. His arranged marriage-once a cultural staple of the Indian community-attracted my friends' laughter. "Are you going to have an arranged marriage Ravi?" I had never really thought about the question of marriage before, but understood that saying "yes" would be totally un-John. "No way," I replied. I was keeping my western peers comfortable.

At 13, I moved to New York. The city's cultural diversity makes it an ideal place to be a cultural chooser. In New York, I learned to choose or reject in a way that strengthens my individuality and outgrew that "John" model, which forces one to choose names to please others and reject customs merely to fit in with peers. Rather, I choose and reject based on my view of the world. As a global cultural chooser, I am forced to think deeply about values and morality in a fresh way. I do not automatically embrace or reject something because it is Indian, American or English. I often deeply consider if something feels compatible to my taste. In doing so, I have grown to control many of the cultural influences of my identity.

My embrace of my religion challenged the "John" template. It started with a question in my English class junior year: "Do you think people look down upon you if you're religious at Trinity?" My classmates hands flew up to answer "yes." Why? The answers were antithetical to my sense of religion as a force of morality in my life. "Most kids at Trinity think that being religious doesn't make logical sense, and so those who are religious are kind of seen as illogical." For the most part, all the kids in the class felt this way. I felt cornered because I was amongst the minority; I did not agree at all. I had chosen Hinduism as my religion; my parents had left the decision up to me. To me, it seemed logical to choose this part of my family's Indian culture, because I related to many of the principles. How could my peers think that intelligence and religion were incompatible when I myself underwent such a logical process of choosing my faith?

A year later, I stood on stage in front of my whole school in a special assembly presented by the South Asian Society about Diwali and Hinduism. The topic of my speech? The role faith and doubt play in religion. I spoke about faith in front of an audience who were dismissive of its value because I am not "John." I no longer need to please my "customers," although I am interested in hearing their ideas as well as mine. I try to pick the best aspects of all the cultures at my disposal, in order to create my own "homeland."

Ravi Popat is a freshman at Tufts University and a graduate of the Trinity School in New York.

Arias jury foreman says life or death decision unfair

PHOENIX (AP) ? They were 12 ordinary citizens who didn't oppose the death penalty. But unlike spectators outside the courthouse who followed the case like a daytime soap opera and jumped to demand Jodi Arias' execution, the jurors faced a decision that was wrenching and real, with implications that could haunt them forever.

In an interview Friday, jury foreman William Zervakos provided a glimpse into the private deliberations, describing four women and eight men who struggled with the question: How heinous of a killing deserves a similar fate?

"The system we think is flawed in that sense because this was not a case of a Jeffrey Dahmer or Charles Manson," Zervakos told The Associated Press.

"It was a brutal no-win situation. ... I think that's kind of unfair," the 69-year-old added. "We're not lawyers. We can't interpret the law. We're mere mortals. And I will tell you I've never felt more mere as a mortal than I felt for the last five months."

Zervakos said the most difficult time of the entire trial was hearing directly from victim Travis Alexander's family as his brother and sister tearfully explained how his killing has shattered their lives.

"There was no sound in that jury room for a long time after that because you hurt so bad for these people," he said. "But that wasn't evidence. That's what made it so hard. ... This wasn't about them. This was a decision whether we're going to tell somebody they were going to be put to death or spend the rest of their life in prison."

Zervakos described a deliberations room full of tears and spinning moral compasses as each juror struggled to come to grips with their own beliefs about what factors ? including Arias' young age at the time of the killing and her lack of criminal history ? should cause them to show mercy and spare her life.

"You've got Travis Alexander's family devastated, that he was killed, that he was brutally killed. You've got Jodi Arias' family sitting in there, both families sitting and seeing these humiliating images and listening to unbelievably lurid private details of their lives, and you've got a woman whose life is over, too," Zervakos said. "I mean, who's winning in this situation? And we were stuck in the middle."

Zervakos declined to discuss his thoughts or those of other jurors on whether Arias should have been sentenced to death or life. But he said he was torn between her two personas: a killer and an average young woman struggling through life.

"You heard (prosecutor Juan) Martinez say she was only 27. ... She's old enough that she should have known better," Zervakos said. "I didn't look at it that way. I'm looking at 27 years of an absolutely normal everyday young woman that was living a life that was perfectly normal. Then something changed the trajectory of her life after meeting Travis Alexander, and it spiraled downhill from there."

The same jury on May 8 convicted Arias of first-degree murder in Alexander's killing, but couldn't reach a decision Thursday after about 13 hours of deliberations on whether she should live or die.

Judge Sherry Stephens was forced to declare a mistrial of the penalty phase and dismissed the panel.

A conference with the judge and attorneys is set for June 20 to determine how both sides want to proceed. In the interim, Stephens set a July 18 retrial date.

The mistrial set the stage for a whole new proceeding to determine whether the 32-year-old former waitress should get a life sentence or the death penalty for murdering Alexander five years ago.

Arias stabbed and slashed him nearly 30 times, slit his throat slit and shot him in the forehead. Prosecutors said she attacked Alexander in a jealous rage after he wanted to end their relationship and planned a trip to Mexico with another woman. Arias contends it was self-defense.

Prosecutors now have the option to take the death penalty off the table and avoid a new penalty phase. The judge would then determine whether to sentence Arias to spend her entire life behind bars, or give her life with the possibility of release after 25 years. Given Arias could not afford her own defense, taxpayers footed the bill for court-appointed attorneys at a cost so far of nearly $1.7 million, a price tag that will only balloon if the case moves forward.

Should the state decide to seek death again, jury selection alone could take months, given the difficulty of seating an impartial panel in a case that has attracted global attention and become daily cable TV and tabloid fodder with tales of sex, lies and violence, said jury consultant Jo-Ellan Dimitrius.

"Will it be impossible? No. Will it be tough? Absolutely," she said.

Dimitrius noted that jury selection in the widely publicized trial of infamous serial killer Richard Ramirez, known as the "Night Stalker," who is on death row in California, took six months as attorneys weeded through more than 2,000 prospective jurors.

If Arias faces a new penalty phase, her murder conviction would stand, leaving the new panel tasked only with sentencing her. However, the proceedings could drag on for several more months as the new jury reviews evidence and witness testimony.

If the second jury cannot reach a unanimous decision, the judge would then sentence Arias to one of the life-in-prison options. The judge cannot sentence Arias to death.

Budget cuts mean unpaid day off for many in gov't

WASHINGTON (AP) ? No one answered the tax-help hotline at the IRS. Forget about getting advice on avoiding foreclosures at any of the Housing and Urban Development offices nationwide.

Roughly 5 percent of the federal workforce ? 115,000 people at six government agencies ? got an unpaid day off on Friday due to the automatic "sequester" cuts to the budget. The furloughs led some agencies such as the IRS and HUD to drastically scale back operations.

There was only a negligible effect at some other agencies. The Labor Department had just 437 of about 16,500 workers furloughed.

Besides, it was the Friday before the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

There are more furlough days to come.

Drought makes Borneo's trees flower at the same time

Thursday, May 23, 2013

Tropical plants flower at supra-annual irregular intervals. In addition, mass flowering is typical for the tropical forests in Borneo and elsewhere, where hundreds of different plant timber species from the Dipterocarpaceae family flower synchronously. This phenomenon is all the more puzzling because both temperature and day length are relatively constant all year round due to geographical proximity to the equator. Up to now it was supposed that several weeks of drought may trigger mass flowering in Borneo's forests. However, no empirical data and genetic analyses were available. An international research team headed up by evolutionary biologists at the University of Zurich has now identified two genes responsible for the flowering of a tropical deciduous tree species Shorea beccariana. After drought periods, the two genes SbFT and SbSVP undergo dramatic transcriptional changes directly before flowering. The researchers can also confirm the flowering functions of these two genes using transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana plants.

85-meter canopy crane necessary for sample collection

The PhD student Masaki Kobayashi, his supervisor Professor Kentaro Shimizu and their Malaysian, Taiwanese and Japanese colleagues collected multiple buds from a single Shorea beccariana tree shortly before the start of flowering. "Given the fact that Shorea is a giant tree, having its crown at 40 meters of height, this sample collection was not easy at all", says Shimizu. Only with the help of an 85m high canopy crane were they able to collect samples at six different time points over a two-year period. Next, they analyzed the sample material using a next-generation sequencing procedure, which was initially developed for human genome and disease research. In this way, Kobayashi and Shimizu identified 98 genes that are associated with the flowering of the plant ?? including the genes SbFT and SbSVP, which showed transcriptional changes after a drought period and directly before flowering. The scientists then combined their genetic results with the meteorological data of the region. Kobayashi concludes that ?Flowering in Shorea beccariana is triggered by a four-week drought in combination with elevated sucrose levels.?

Toward prediction of mass flowering

Climate change will affect the frequency of drought periods and is thus predicted to affect also the frequency of mass flowering. Environmental protection and restoration of the forests have so far been severely hindered by the irregularity of the mass flowering intervals, which are thus difficult to predict. It was never possible to know when the seeds needed could be collected. The genes that have been identified now indicate when mass flowering is about to happen. ?Successively monitoring of gene activity can help predict when mass flowering will take place?, explains Kobayashi. This will make it possible to coordinate the collection of seeds and improve biodiversity and conservation programs substantially. Kentaro Shimizu and his colleagues will continue to explore these interactions in the newly created University Research Priority Program ?Global Change and Biodiversity? at the University of Zurich.

A change in taste cells makes glucose-baited traps repellent

By Susan Milius

German cockroaches have fought back against bait traps that pair sugar with poison. Over time, the insects have developed taste cells that register sugar as disgusting.

Cockroaches that don?t fall for traps? sweet poisons have evolved taste cells that register sugar as bitter.

In certain groups of the widespread German cockroach (Blattella germanica), nerve cells that normally detect bitter, potentially toxic compounds now also respond to glucose, says entomologist Coby Schal of North Carolina State University in Raleigh. The ?bitter? reaction suppresses the ?sweet? response from other nerve cells, and the roach stops eating, Schal and his colleagues report in the May 24 Science.

Normally roaches love sugar. But with these populations, a dab of jelly with glucose in it makes them ?jump back,? Schal says. ?The response is: ?Yuck! Terrible!??

This quirk of roach taste explains why glucose-baited poison traps stopped working among certain roaches, Schal says. Such bait traps combining a pesticide with something delicious became popular during the mid-1980s. But in 1993, Jules Silverman, also a coauthor on the new paper, reported roaches avoiding these once-appealing baits.

?This is a fascinating piece of work because it shows how quickly, and how simply, the sense of taste can evolve,? says neurobiologist Richard Benton of the University of Lausanne in Switzerland.

What pest-control manufacturers put in their roach baits now, and whether some still use glucose, isn?t public, Schal says. But humankind?s arms race with cockroaches could have started long ago, ?in the caves,? he says. In this back-and-forth struggle, it?s important ?to understand what the cockroach is doing from a molecular basis.?

Roaches don?t detect taste with tongues, as people do, but instead use hairlike structures that grow in lots of spots on their bodies. ?The cockroach can taste things by stepping into them,? Schal says. Taste nerve cells spangle the roach hairs. Coauthor Ayako Wada-Katsumata presented various flavors and measured the responses from two types of nerve cells, the GRN1 cells, which detect sugars, and the GRN2 cells, which normally warn of bitter compounds such as caffeine.

In roaches that shied away from glucose, the sweet-detecting nerve cells continued to fire when exposed to various sugars. What differed in these roaches were the bitter-detecting GRN2 cells, which responded to glucose as well as to bitter compounds. In these insects, bitter overwhelms the signal from the sweet detector.

Among the scenarios Schal imagines for the origin of GRN2?s glucose aversion are a chance mating with some other as-yet-unidentified roach species that doesn?t eat glucose. Or he wonders if the bait traps triggered the spread of formerly rare genetic variations in roach taste cells left over from before the species moved in with people. Those outdoor ancestors might have evolved a distaste for glucose because so many plants defend themselves with compounds called glucosides, blends of sweetness and something noxious.

An aversion to glucose doesn?t mean distaste for all sugars. The new study found roach enthusiasm for fructose, although Schal has heard that other roaches may be averse to it. What would really surprise him, he says, is a roach distaste for the beery sugar maltose. During roach courtship, a male roach offers maltose as a gift to win female favor. The male fans out his wings so a female can climb onto his back to nibble at maltose he produces. ?They use it the way we use chocolates,? he says.

Cockroaches used to love sugar and would mob both jelly and peanut butter. But some roaches have evolved aversions to glucose and avoid jelly.

New bird flu may be capable of human to human spread - study

By Lavinia Mo

HONG KONG (Reuters) - The H7N9 bird flu virus may be capable of spreading from human to human and can be transmitted not only through direct contact but also through airborne exposure, researchers at the University of Hong Kong have found.

The researchers found in a study, presented at a news briefing on Friday, that three ferrets - the main animal used for research into human influenza - that were placed in close contact with ferrets injected with H7N9 contracted the virus.

One out of three that were kept in different cages became infected through airborne exposure.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has previously said it has no evidence of "sustained human to human transmission" of the virus, which has killed 36 people in China.

"The findings suggest that the possibility of this virus evolving further to form the basis of a future pandemic threat cannot be excluded," said the research team, led by bird flu expert and microbiologist Yi Guan.

The team also found that some infected animals did not develop fever and other clinical signs, indicating that asymptomatic infections among humans are possible. That would make the virus harder to detect and control.

The virus can also infect pigs, but could not be transmitted from pig to pig or from pigs to other animals, the study showed, although the team urged authorities to maintain surveillance to ensure the virus did not mutate into a more serious one.

The WHO called the study a good one but cautioned that people "have to be very careful about what's going on the ground".

"Studies like that are really helpful for increasing general knowledge and it's really helpful to know that under lab conditions this thing could transfer from person to person," WHO chief spokesman Gregory Hartl told Reuters.

"We've already seen maybe a few limited instances of human to human transmission within close family range, within close contacts, so this is another piece of the puzzle," he said.

The findings come just days after the WHO said the H7N9 virus appeared to have been brought under control in China thanks to restrictions at bird markets.

H7N9 has relatively mild clinical signs in ferrets, according to the study. All the animals infected with the virus in the experiments presented symptoms for no more than seven days and all recovered from the disease.

The researchers said that cases where humans died or became extremely ill were triggered by additional causes.

"All the deceased or seriously ill patients, (their illness) are due to other causes," said Dr Maria Zhu Huachen from the research team.

United Nations experts said this week the bird flu outbreak in China had caused some $6.5 billion in losses to the economy.

The H7N9 virus is known to have infected 130 people in mainland China since it emerged in March, but no cases have been detected since early May.

Futurity.org ? Polio virus engineered to kill brain tumor

A new treatment for recurrent glioblastomas capitalizes on the discovery that cancer cells have receptors that work like magnets drawing the polio virus, which then infects and kills the cells. (Credit: Sanofi Pasteur/Flickr)

DUKE (US) ? A modified polio virus appears to be effective in attacking glioblastoma brain tumor cells, researchers report in an early study to establish proper dosing levels.

Tested in an ongoing phase 1 study, the treatment capitalizes on the discovery that cancer cells have an abundance of receptors that work like magnets drawing the polio virus, which then infects and kills the cells.

The investigational therapy, known as PVSRIPO, uses an engineered form of the virus that is lethal to cancer cells, while harmless to normal cells.

Infused directly into the patient?s tumor, the virus-based therapy also triggers the body?s immune fighters to launch an attack against the infected tumor cells.

Preliminary data, presented at the 2013 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago, previews the results of seven patients enrolled in the study whose tumors reoccurred despite traditional treatments for glioblastoma multiforme, the most common and aggressive brain tumor.

Of the patients enrolled in the study, three have responded well to the drug. One patient remains disease-free 12 months after treatment, another 11 months post-treatment and the third is disease-free after five months.

With traditional treatment, about half of glioblastoma patients see recurrent tumor growth within eight weeks.

Two patients in the study did not fair as well; one had recurrent tumor growth after two months, and another?s condition declined after four months. The remaining two patients have been treated in the last three and two months, respectively, and currently remain disease free.

?These early results are intriguing,? says Annick Desjardins, principal investigator and associate professor of medicine at Duke University School of Medicine.

?Current therapies for glioblastoma are limited because they cannot cross the blood-brain barrier and often do not specifically attack the tumor. This treatment appears to overcome those problems. We are eager to see additional results as we move forward with our study.?

Abercrombie & Fitch: What's wrong with selling just to 'cool people'?

Abercrombie & Fitch, one of the top sellers of young adult clothing in America, is again mired in controversy, this time over its refusal to offer plus-size clothes for teens.

The retailer, which operates 295 stores across the US, is the target of several online protests responding to comments made in a 2006 interview by its CEO, Mike Jeffries, who said he is primarily interested in marketing to ?the cool kids? and ?good-looking people.?

?We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don?t belong [in our clothes], and they can?t belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely. Those companies that are in trouble are trying to target everybody: young, old, fat, skinny. But then you become totally vanilla.?

RECOMMENDED: Are you a smart shopper? Take our quiz.

The remarks, which originally ran in Salon, were republished this month by Business Insider in a wider story about marketing to plus-size teenagers. The article title, ?Abercrombie & Fitch refuses to make clothes for large women,? didn?t help soften things either.

Mr. Jeffries says the quotes were taken out of context. In a Facebook posting last week, he said that while he regretted his word choice and is ?strongly committed to diversity and inclusion,? his brand is ?aspirational? in that ?targets its marketing at a particular segment of customers.?

This week, a spokesperson for the company told NBC News that, ?we sincerely regret and apologize for any offense caused by comments we have made in the past which are contrary? to ?diversity and inclusion.?

Want your top political issues explained? Get customized DC Decoder updates.

Those gestures have not swayed critics who say the company is creating damaging images for teenagers both through its marketing images, which typically show svelte models in provocative poses, and its policy of not offering clothing for women above size 10.

The controversy is not the first for the retailer. In the past, it was criticized for photo shoots that showed young teenagers in positions that suggested they were participating in group sex, along with ad copy in its catalog that some ridiculed as soft pornography. The company is also remembered for a T-shirt line, later recalled, that mocked Asians

An online protest that asks the company to ?start making clothes for young people of all shapes and sizes? has collected more than 71,000 signatures, and a viral video on YouTube that asks people who own clothing made by the company to donate them to the homeless, has more than 7.2 million views. Other protests, such as a campaign by plus-size blogger Jes Baker, have entered the spotlight for presenting arguments on why catering to the needs of plus-size youth matters.

The plus-size market for teenage clothing was largely ignored until the recession, says Marshal Cohen, chief retail analyst at the NPD Group. Once considered a niche, with growth potential in the single digits, the market is now more desirous for companies that need to make their bottom line at whatever cost. That can mean expanding their clothing lines with fashion-forward products that appeal to the growing population of plus-size teens.

Swedish retailer H&M, denim retailer Lucky Brand, and The Limited all created specialty brands targeting teenage girls who are plus-sized. Even reality television stars the Kardashian sisters are getting into the game; their plus-size brand Kardashian Kurves, launched this year at Sears.

?We?re just getting bigger and bigger and bigger so the number of people entering into plus-size continues to get bigger. There?s always been the opportunity, but never one that somebody?s tried to capitalize on before,? says Mr. Cohen. ?What you have now are consumers desperately seeking fashion for their size and retailers saying, ?We get it, we?ll offer you something.? ?

Research that shows that obesity is particularly prevalent among children and teenagers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that in 2009-10, 17 percent of US children and adolescents were reported as obese, which is three times the obesity rate just one generation ago. The age group most likely to be obese: those aged 12 to 19.

The NPD Group, a market research firm in Port Washington, N.Y., says that clothing retailers have mostly accommodated this trend by offering larger clothing sizes ? since 1960, for example, the average dress size increased from size 8 to 14. Two-thirds of women identify themselves as ?special-sized,? according to NPD, which means there is more demand for this type of clothing in the women?s clothing market, valued at $111 billion in 2012.

Cohen says that despite the opportunity that others have capitalized on, it is unlikely that Abercrombie & Fitch will do a mea culpa and launch a plus-size brand.

?Abercrombie from Day 1 said, ?We are about the iconic image of the quintessential affluent teen' ? and they want to maintain that certain imagery at all cost,? he says. Switching gears in response to the current controversy may appease critics, he adds, but it will ultimately dilute what gave the brand value in the first place.

?If they alter their course, they?ll do more damage than good,? Cohen says. ?If you try to be something for everybody, you end up being nothing for everyone.?

Normal or Not? When Grief and Depression Mingle

Editor?s Note: With the release of the latest edition of the mental health manual, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (the DSM), LiveScience takes a close look at some of the disorders it defines. This series asks the fundamental question: What is normal, and what is not?

The profound sadness that stems from grief can look a lot like the sadness depression brings. The similarity can create a dilemma for mental health professionals: When should someone experiencing the loss of a loved one be diagnosed as depressed?

In its criteria for depression, the previous version of the mental health manual, the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV), gave many people who are grieving a two-month pass on being diagnosed with depression. (This exemption did not apply to people experiencing extreme symptoms, such as psychosis.)

The architects of the new DSM-5, which will be released tomorrow (May 22), found this two-month cutoff arbitrary and unnecessary and so have removed it, making it much easier to diagnose a grieving person with depression. [The 10 Most Controversial Psychiatric Disorders]

Bereavement doesn't necessarily last two months, and someone could grieve and suffer from major depression at the same time, argue the leaders of the DSM-5 task force in a summary published online in February in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

In both forms of sadness, someone can experience a loss of interest or pleasure in activities they normally enjoy, as well as changes in sleeping patterns, difficulty concentrating, fatigue and other symptoms. However, there are distinctions. Someone who is grieving typically focuses his or her thoughts on the person who has passed away and experiences waves of pain rather than the constant pain typical of depression. Research also indicates that in most cases the depression-mimicking symptoms associated with grief tend to lessen over time with the help of family and friends. ?

"When there wasn't effective medication available for depression, I think people had a higher tolerance for grief," said Robin Rosenberg, a clinical psychologist and co-author of "Abnormal Psychology" (Worth Publishers, 2009). "But because there is medication available, some people feel that because we can do something that potentially alleviates the suffering associated with grief, we should."

Those in favor of removing the two-month "pass," known as the bereavement exclusion, argue that allowing the diagnosis of depression among those in mourning could prevent or reduce suffering. Those on the other side worry about an over-diagnosis of depression and unnecessary prescriptions, as well as a reduced tolerance for grief as a natural process, Rosenberg said.??

Being diagnosed with major depressive disorder has many repercussions and can affect how those diagnosed view themselves and their risk of subsequent depressive episodes, she added.

Pakistani cricket star politician leaves hospital

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Pakistani cricket star-turned-politician Imran Khan left a hospital Wednesday, more than two weeks after he suffered serious back injuries in a fall from a forklift at a campaign event, a spokesman said.

Khan will remain at his home in the eastern city of Lahore for a while so that doctors can monitor his progress, said the spokesman for the cricketer's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, Naeemul Haq.

"Thank God, Imran can walk," said Haq. "He is now at his home after being discharged from the hospital."

Khan fractured three vertebrae and a rib when he fell 4.5 meters (15 feet) off a forklift that was raising him to a stage at a campaign event in Lahore on May 7.

The accident, which was broadcast on TV, largely knocked Khan out of the final days of campaigning ahead of national elections, held on May 11. He later delivered video messages to his supporters from his hospital bed.

Khan, who is revered in Pakistan for leading the national team that won the 1992 cricket World Cup, ran an election campaign that energized the country's youth. He criticized traditional politicians as corrupt and declared it was time for change in Pakistan, a nuclear-armed nation of 180 million people.

The Pakistan Muslim League-N party, led by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, was able to weather the challenge by Khan in the election. Sharif's party scored a resounding victory, winning close to a majority of the 272 directly-elected national assembly seats. It is expected to form the next government.

Khan's party fell well short of its prediction that it would sweep the election, but still improved on its past performance. It won at least 28 National Assembly seats, compared to only one seat in the 2002 election.

The Pakistani Taliban tried to disrupt the election with deadly attacks in the run-up to the vote. But over 46 million citizens ignored the danger and came out to vote, a turnout of about 55 percent of registered voters, according to the election commission.
